Sorry what I meant was statues and focal points. Basically objects nestled in amongst the plants that I could use to give the garden a bit of depth. I forgot that that long list you are all considered features. I've toyed with the idea of a water feature, but have no room.

I don't I'm afraid. I know of the site, have been on it a few times but don't really understand what the point is.

I know what you mean ... some people must spend their whole lives on there recording things and then Following others / being Followed ... what use is a folder with 5,432 things you have seen at some point on your travels?!!

I use it strictly to record things I'm interested in. You see a site, you like a photo on it, you want to remember it for the future. What to do? You can add it to your favourites, but for a scrapbook type jotting that's no use - in my case I would never remember to look at it again.

So I use Pinterest to record it - much like a scrapbook.

Pinterest puts an ICON in my browser toolbar, then when I'm on a site and see something I like I press the ICON and Pinterest displays all the pictures on the page and I choose the one I want to "save". I then get to choose which folder ("board") I put it in (or create a new one), and type a short description. Pinterest uses the Title of the page I'm on by default for the description or, if I remember!!!, I can highlight a bit of text on the underlying page before I press the Pinterest icon and then it uses that as my description. Or type one of course.

You can have up to 4 "secret" boards / folders, so you don't have to make what you pin public.

Pinterest keeps a local copy of the image you grabbed, so if the website ceases to exist, or changes/revamps, then you still have the original photo. It also stores a link to the page you uploaded it from, so you can easily navigate back there. (You can upload your own pictures direct too, if you want)

More handy than Favourites IMHO, and better than saving images locally on my PC as on Pinterest I have the mini description and the link to the original site too.

Definitely recommended even if you only use the Secret boards (4 is a bit of a limiting factor though)

My daughters each have a Board for the other, so they can grab pictures that they see than might interest the other.

Have you got a hedge that you could cut a window in for a borrowed view?

Of course if you have a vista to a local landmark that would be great :) I like the ones at East Ruston Old Vicarage:

I doubt many/ANY! of us have those oven-ready views, so this one is a bit easier:

as you could just have the statue (assuming you don't have an obliging church too!)

I like the brick pillars they have at the ends of (or both sides of openings in) their hedges too. Every one/pair is different, although all using the same type/colour of bricks:

I have a search running on eBay for statues / garden ornaments within 25 miles. About once a year something comes up that I fancy driving to buy :)

The other thing I would like to do is to plant some hedge plants "behind" my dividing edges, and then remove the plants IN the hedge [i.e. in front of the new plants] so that I can have an alcove for a statue - a bit like the long galleries in stately homes.

How about carving airblocks / thermolite blocks? I reckon you'd be good at that :dbgrtmb: (I'm sure there is plenty on Google, but I'll PM you a link - its on a rival forum :hate-shocked::) )

        Other thoughts:

I fancy a sun dial. The type where there is a pointer in the middle of the lawn, and then some "slabs" with the numerals carved on them. The spot where the pointer needs to be moves with the seasons, so that could be variable; I've seen ones (again with slabs to mark the positions) where you stand with your arm up as the pointer and then see where your shadow is cast :)

There are [designs for] sundials that you can mount on the side of a building too

I just relised I do this all the time but put them as bookmarks in my browser. Which I'm sure is taking up space on my hard drive. Can I use Pinterest anywhere if I logged in on a different computer or phone say if I wanted to show something to the OH? I think I will join anyway though. I have found more and more projects I want to try always leads me to that website.

I have a hedge. But the only borrowed view I will get is off my neighbour and what women he is with this week. That's more entertainment than a focal point. :heehee:

Intriguing. I have been toying with the idea of carving a green man plague but haven't really done any relief carving yet in wood, or can find a piece thick enough or good enough to use. A block could be an interesting alternative. Wouldn't the block decay over time though?

First of all. That giraffe is awesome. Where on earth did you find that?

Also I should add that I've been thinking of making a scarecrow of my own in the vegetable patch just to add a bit of interest in there too. Has anyone else put on of these on their vegetable patches?

Probably not a significant amount of space, but I find that Bookmarks are a bit useless as a scrapbook. They are fine for "That Bulb supplier I like to use" but for "Ideas for my pond" I have to then call up each one, remind myself what the page was about, decide that wasn't the particular nudge that I needed ... takes too long. Or I remember exactly which one it was and then find that the website is no more :( or has changed and the photos are no longer the ones that originally attracted me.

Yup. You'll be allocated a User ID and then a simple URL, looking something like this:
              www.pinterest.com/JungleJane/boards/
will show all your "boards" (unless the things you have "pinned" are in a private area then you'd need to login on that PC, but for anything in public boards just the URL will do). You can assign other people permission to post on your Boards, so OH could post things he finds onto your board / vice versa.

I doubt you need an example, but FWIW here's mine:
              http://pinterest.com/kgardenpins/boards/

I had the same thought. I can ask on that forum if you like?

Someone started a new thread called. Show me your garden features. Puzzled by what that meant, so opened it to find features meant ornaments. I knew one had been started already.

that'd look great up against a hedge to give the impression that the horse is actually standing on t'other side & has stuck its head through the hedge :)
