Last weekend the lad and I built some state of the art, experimental garden lights.

The remit was very demanding. The lights had to be extremely low cost and simple to make. They had to be quite pretty. So far easy enough, but, they had to use zero energy. Nil, nada, none. Magic. The prototype has worked quite well, giving really strong bars of vivid colour, but better, the colours change depending on the viewing angle and even the breeze. They do not cast much light, but that was the plan, more of a show piece than to illuminate. Here is a night time photo of the prototype in action. See if you can guess what technologies we utilised.

Has nobody figured it yet? After my beer I might post up another, slightly more revealing photo. And maybe another one of the prototype light.

Have you genetically engineered fireflies? And then trained them to fly in a formation?

I think it's powered by solar gain and you've made plastic shapes and stuck coloured foil on them.

Good theories so far. Here is another photo, this time with the floodlight also switched on. A clearer picture will follow if nobody figures it soon:) Another clue. The most high tech components started to hit the mass market in the early 1990s, and by the early naughties had become so cheap you could buy them in packs of a hundred or more for around a fiver.
