Have you tried it in another USB socket?

'a wireless usb', I assume you mean stick that connects you to your router.

When you get this error with USB devices it’s because one of the drivers controlling the device notified the operating system that the device failed in some manner.
This can be because of corruption in one of the loaded drivers and the driver cache just needs to be flushed.
Unplugging the computer sometimes doesn’t resolve the problem because the battery still holds power. To fix this, unplug all of your USB devices, then turn off the PC and take out the battery (This is assuming that you’re on a laptop), let the PC sit for about 5 minutes, then put the battery back in and restart the PC.
Next, plug your USB devices back in one at a time and make sure that they work.

Let us know how you get on

I have to nip out for a while but should be back in an hour or so. I'll check back then.

          Try the easy ones first:

          1) restarting the laptop

          2) if that didn't fix it shut it down, turn the power off, remove the battery, wait a few minutes and put it back in and start it up.

This is the official Microsoft solution

            1. To open Device Manager, click Start, click Search programs and files, and then type Device Manager. A list of available matching items appears above the search box; click Device Manager. Device Manager opens with your computer name at the top and a list of devices that are installed on your computer beneath your computer name.
            2. Locate the malfunctioning device in the list of devices, right-click the device, and then click Uninstall. When a warning message appears that you are uninstalling a device from your system, click OK. Device manager uninstalls the device
            3. Right-click your computer name in Device Manager and click Scan for hardware changes. Device manager scans your system and automatically reinstalls your device.
            4. Right-click the device and click Properties. On the General tab of the device Properties dialog box, in Device status, you should see the message This device is working properly.

@wiseowl if this is you wifi USB device that's not working, now are you posting? (or have you resorted to a cable connection to your router, and if so have you still got the driver disk that came with the USB device, probably a mini one?)
