Has anyone got any advice on puppy training? I'm specifically after advice re crates and whether an exercise pen is also required? Thanks :)

Hi Ellen...i understand the crate method works well for the pups ..but me being me i can't bare that sad little face staring out at me so i just run myself wragged pandering to their every whim:doh:....i'd never make a dog trainer but my two lads are gud uns and haven't given me any problems thus far...someone with more practical advice will be along to give you proper advice...i'm too much of a push over:doh:...

    You getting that puppy?:dancy:

@Loli we're getting a border terrier pup. The fella we were originally looking at would have been difficult to get out of bad habits... A puppy will be a lot of work but we can get him to be as well-trained as we can :) he's ready booked onto his Puppy Foundation course! :)

I have never used a crate for any of my dogs. I just train by reward.
Do get us some pics of your new baby please. :)

I have never crated my big dogs but I do my 2 Jacks as they are such little terrors.. :doggieshmooze: It is easy to do & they love their crate.. I keep a dark blanket that is half draped over permanently, ( so it is like a cave) then I drop it over completely when I want them to sleep, or quiet time, day or night.. They have a snuggly fleece bed inside.. They also travel in crates as well no problem.. The rest of the time I have child stair gates in the house to keep them where I want them & they have the run of the garden.. Borders are usually very quick to learn & easy to train.. I know 2 here in the village that my Jacks play with.. :blue thumb: Happy days..

For the first few nights did you put the crate in your bedroom? Our kitchen, where we plan to train him early on etc, is the other end of the house and we won't be able to hear him if he needs a nighttime wee!

Well I kept mine in the kitchen where it would always be.. I can hear them though if they are whining, but to be honest I never did hear anything from them.. Once the blanket went down they just settled down..
You could try it upstairs for the first few nights, perhaps the landing rather than your bedroom.. You don't want to make a future problem for yourself..

Dogs and children, praise them when they`re good , correct them when they`re naughty, tone of voice works for me, if like Marley you are going to keep your dog in a crate as his sleeping area, sheets of newspapers until he can go through, but he will still be a baby and missing his family.

Newspaper is a must! The vets have also recommended puppy pads, as they're scented??
