I bought a small 'Australis' off one of local market stalls earlier this year which he was selling off, it looked much like yours Mowgley and after potting up, all year its not grown any taller than 18 inches but has produced an impressive clump with deep red leaves and has flowered well too :), question is though, is there a dwarf strain of this variety as I thought it was a taller plant? :)

That was my thinking too @Bilbo675 , flowered in late July/august (good show too)
But looking at most of the australis on the net, they seem as you say taller :dunno:

                Looks good :)

A Paulownia tomentosa to stool perhaps? (Think I have some spare seedlings :) )

What about a Cycas? I don't have any spares of those, but there is a German on Spanish eBay that does some good deals on stock that is rejected by the posh stores, and his carriage rates to UK are surprisingly cheap. He has a large selection of Palms too

                Tree ferns perhaps?

Gotta turn your exotic addiction into an obsession :heehee:

(he may not be the easiest person to do a transaction with, feedback from people I know who have bought from him varies, can't argue with the price though!)

I'll sort you one out, I'm pretty sure I have a spare. Probably ought to be planted for one year as-is, and then stool the spring after that.

This is mine, stooled for the first time this spring
