Cor blimey, I dunno:dunno: My gut reaction is that they count as two. I have had one or two split/divide towards the end of growth, but nothing like that. Maybe someone else could cast more light on it....

I don't know either, are you really sure they are connected HsuH? I wonder if it's just that the roots are inter-twined. I reckon you need to dissect them and see if they share the same base, if so then it's one onion :dbgrtmb:

I wonder if you slide a piece of cotton between them whether or not like JWK says they are connected at the roots:dunno:....what 'breed' are they HsuH?....

Would just like to add...my Mammoths although not 'mammoth' do have a lovely sweet flavour and are tastey either raw or fried...:blue thumb:

        Hiya Jenny.

It might be the perspective, take a look at post #1059 for a better view of the size.

Tried @Loli 's cotton thread method without success then proceeded as @JWK suggested, now the operation on my Siamese twin onion has completed. They were definitely joined at the base not just roots intertwined.

They are Ailsa Craig. I only started to grow onions last year when they did fine till August when they got downy mildew. However, we still managed to harvest a reasonable crop. This year I grew just over 40 plants, no disease on them, but size varies hugely, 1/2 dozen of them were quite small at about 4 oz or so, a quarter of them were normal half pounder size, and the rest were around 1lb to 1.5lb. I've no idea why they were not uniform in size? Also during the long dry periods we didn't water them, not sure whether the lack of water had any effect on them

The trouble we find with onions weighing more than 1/2 lb or so is the difficulty in using them up in one dinner. There's a limit to the amount of onion 2 people can eat :eeew:

Onions like it dry but there has to be some moisture in the ground, if the ground had totally dried out that would affect them.

Same here with the 4 lb Kelsae, it's just too much. My son doesn't eat onions unless they are coated in batter and my wife only likes them once in a while. So I'm trying to eat the flipping thing on my own. My work colleagues are suffering when I open up my packed lunch as it's mostly raw onion in there :)

I think a 1lb onion is a better size, they last a few days so we have an air-tight plastic container to stop it stinking out the fridge :cry3:

I'm sure it's worse when keeping hens and getting egg sandwiches to eat at your desk every day.

So here is my best set grown onion, a feeble 275 g which is just over 9 oz in old money:

Here's another funny thing, drying out my giant Kelsae and one of them has started sprouting from the base!
