2013 - Biggest tomato Competition

Nail biting stuff now, as when tomatoes get over 15" girth even every ⅕ of an inch increase in girth can add one ounce in weight (for a big round tomato). Some of mine are now going up to several days without any perceivable increase in girth, and then (like this afternoon) I find some have increased in girth by 0.25 inches. Fortunately, there's been exceptionally mild overnight temps here (and forecast for many days to come), plus loads of sunny days, so my big ones are still growing (and the smaller ones are catching them up).

I'll be happy if I break the 2lb barrier this year, so I can raise the bar to 3lbs next year.

I'm wondering if Jack is going to break the 3lb barrier this year with his largest Bulgarian Giant which was 18" girth at the last report.

Which still seems rather small compared to what I saw today

 

I suppose the winner of that show was for weight/girth otherwise I would not consider it worthy

I think produce should be in better condition, ie no scars or multi headed stuff
You do not get carrots riddled with carrot fly, or onions eaten by snails at shows do you ?

I'll start mine off with this one that's stopped growing and started ripening at 17" girth and weighs 710g. I'm hoping that I'll be able to better this shortly.

Final weigh in for me
First I gouged out several small worm things , thin black and yellow about half an inch long
First pic was with the stalk
Second with stalk removed
Third showing worm damage
The weight was with the worm bits scooped out and stalk removed

Maybe next time I'll take pics of both the giant and the 'quality' stuff for side by side comparison, but even then the 'good looking' veg isn't necessarily the best tasting.

 

At least I had 7 hours of fame!

@Jack McHammocklashing - did you take any pics of those worms? And what was the girth of the tomato?

 

Girth of the Tom was 16.5 inches
No idea of original weight as I Took the wormed bits out before weigh in

I did not take a pic of the worms, no doubt there will be more in my other ones
They were about 2mm thick, and varied between 1cm and 3 cm long, each singly curled up in a circle within its tiny entry hole

The Tomato was one of my Angelinas Bulgarians very thin skinned, light pink/yellowish flesh and rich red seed pulp
