I have just received an email, with an offer to try out a magazine (Grow Your Own) for 3 issues at £6

Not a great saving on the normal price, but also included are 10 packets of seeds, detailed below.

Now ! I'm the type of person, who would happily join for the trial and NOT FORGET to cancel, if I decide the magazine is not for me. So for £6, I get three magazines and all these seeds.

I've just got an allotment, about 2 weeks ago, so will be buying seeds for 2014. I was just wondering if any of the following are the ones 'to choose' if I was buying directly, not getting free.

    Beetroot 'Moneta'

    Broccoli 'Red Arrow'

    Cabbage 'January King'

    Carrot 'Flyaway F1'

    Lettuce 'Headed Mixed'

    Chard 'Bright Lights'

    Mustard 'Oriental Ruby Streaks'

    Onion ' White Lisbon'

    Radish 'French Breakfast'

    Rocket 'Summer Veg'

I'd go for it - as long as you really, really won't forget to cancel.

Most of those are standard varieties that you see everywhere. Not the most modern varieties, but they'll no doubt give you a crop.

As for rocket - rocket is rocket, right? I'm pretty sure no-one's been breeding posh rocket varieties, the stuff is basically a (delicious) weed, they give it a name to make it sound more important, then they can charge more.

The Flyaway carrot could be interesting, my carrots are always riddled with fly so anything that might help is useful.

Thanks for the reply. With internet / phone reminders, let alone the wall calendars, it would seem harder, not to forget.

I remember a few years ago, mobile phone cashbacks were very common. Obviously the companies hoped you would forget, or send the wrong bill back ... I never did. I actually put reminders on the phone on the day it arrived, with a backup reminder 'just in case'

I actually once had a 12 month contact, with 12 months free via cashback. that was a good year, zero pennies spent for my mobile.

ps. The Radio Times normally have an offer in early January, for so many copies free, as a trial run. Sign up, get the free ones, then cancel .. in good time. EASY !

As Madahhlia has already said, most are popular standard varieties. I would add that they are popular because they are good reliable croppers.

January King, White Lisbon and French Breakfast are all dependable favourites which I grow every year and which rarely let me down.

I did try growing Flyaway carrots once and didn't bother again. In my garden at least, they proved no better at resisting carrot fly than any other variety.

Yep, nowt wrong with that list.

Don't think they're trying to say the rocket is a variety, probably just had to put Summer veg in that field before it would let them press enter
