It's been a good year for spuds here. This year I didn't buy special seed but sowed a bag of Tesco King Edwards, 6 x 4m rows in the ground and 6 spuds in the compost heap. The ones in the ground cropped well, but those in the compost heap did even better. I just lifted the latter at the weekend.
Last year our butternut squash were a disaster due to the cold spring/early summer and we didn't get a single squash. This year our two plants grew like triffids and produced 10 squash. We've eaten two already and the remainder will be stored.

      Smashing result Dave :dbgrtmb:

Kristen is not allowed to have a go at you for not using seed potatoes on account of you living in the frozen North

Don't know about frozen North this year Zig's, we were on Skye last week and I was still slobbing around in shorts and sandals. Temperature is due to change now though according to the forecast, we're off to the Cairngorms next week and there's snow on the tops forecast!

The Tesco spuds were locally grown so I thought I'd take a chance and it paid off with no probs apart from a bit of scab which isn't due to the seed being untreated. It was interesting to see the difference between those in planted in the ground and those in the compost heap. The ones in the ground 'went over' about a month before those in the heap and the yield from the heap was significantly greater per seed.
