What Jobs Are We Doing in the Garden Today... MK3.. 2013

My cuttings are a few weeks behind.....

 

Repotted my snowdrop collection. Should have done it a month or more ago, most well sprouted and with quite a lot of root, hopefully not disturbed them too much, but they were still in the 9cm pots they came in and I bought tall Clematis pots for them (back in the Spring <Sigh!>) so I decided it was better to get them into a deeper root-run and risk some disturbance ... time will tell.

Upside they have all multiplied, bless them.

Downside: I appear to have more than 20, given that they ain't cheap I think I must have got carried away with my new-found hobby last Spring. More self control needed this coming Spring ... that can't be hard, surely?

 

Kristen.....gardeners and self control? Nahhhh!

 

I find that self control is definitely half-hardy at best. One sharp blast of frost, with the seed catalogues landing on your doormat, and you've totally lost it!!

 

... impulse-purchase being as hardy as a rock of course

 

Pulled up my 2 pumpkins, cannot remember their name, something blue- as the skin is darkish blue. Also collected a small pumpkin/squash, picked the last of my runner beans.

Picked the last of my pear's, tidied up the fallen leaves. Also cleared up the last of my cucumbers, cleared all the greenery, put into composter. Put the last of my cuttings in my winter greenhouse, which is now completely full.

Grass has been cut, time to finish, just did a bit of watering. Now the weather can do what it likes, within reason !!

 

As there's a fairly reasonable prospect of my plot being frosted tonight I've pulled up all my outdoor bush tomatoes (except Koraliks) and cut off any decent size green fruits, picked every tomato from the others that remotely resembles ripening and covered up what's left with a mixture of old sheets, gazebo curtains, net curtains, etc. and I'm hoping this cold spell will be over in several days and my toms will then carry on cropping until the end of the month.

Went to pick my last 2 pumpkins and found another one was rotten and the other had the beginnings of bottom rot.





I grow my cordon toms in double rows using 'A' frame supports (rather like mini runner bean structures) which makes covering them up much easier than if using multiple single cane supports.

 

Hope a Force 10 gale doesn't blow up in the small hours of the morning Scrungee.... Jenny

 

Preparing my GH ready for winter and collecting leaves

 

Planted 2 Persicara Red Dragon in the communal border. Trimmed the Diascia Rigicens. Took off some more beefsteak tomatoes - now in the oven with garlic olive oil for 24hours, slowly drying out a bit. Loitered in the sun...

Cleared the last of the toms and peppers out of the GH.
Emptied the hanging baskets and took some geranium and fuchsia cuttings from them (not hoping for much from them).
Swept a black Darlek compost bin full of soggy wet leaves from the front of the house.
Collected some more canna seeds (welcome to have some anybody)

 

Loitered in the sun Jenny? For me to day it was running through the rain!

 

I was out most of the day but came home and put the hose on the beds and trees, it's so dry here again.
