2013 Tomato Growing

    It's just happened to me again, and the seeds were in water for several hours less than than 4 days

    That was all the seeds from my 3rd largest Phil's Fantastic and only 9 of them showed no visible signs of sprouting but the damage may have already been done. I thought I would have had plenty of seeds from my 3 largest tomatoes but when I cut up the 2nd largest this morning there was only 6 very small seeds inside it, so they may not be properly formed. Six tiny seeds from this tomato!

    And it wasn't as juicy as normal

    so if my largest one's the same it looks like I might have to keep a plant or two going a bit longer to get seeds this year.

    Seeds! Thank goodness for that.

      Strange how they vary in colour. On a visit to Helmsley Walled garden a few weeks ago I noticed their Sungolds were yellow, compared to mine and your's being gold.

      Did you taste one? My yellow Sungellas are really bland, nothing like what I expected from them.

      Well done Scrungee, that soup looks soooooo good Jenny!!

      I find that when I am fermenting seeds, after a couple days I change out the water, just dump back into the strainer and refill with fresh water, and that stops the seeds from sprouting, and cuts down on the smell too.

        I've yet to find a seed from my Big Zac....not a one so far...i've a couple left to rummage through but i was really suprised not to find any:dunno:

        What causes it I wonder Scrungee?
        I change water almost daiuly , but now I'm keeping the pot in the dark/shade as I'm cleaning a mix of the Bulgarian Turk and Canary in one pot.
        Anyone else having this happening?

        Does anyone want seeds from any of mine? I don't have time to "ferment" them, but I could wrap them in some damp kitchen paper (or whatever would be best) and post them.

        Not sure what is left that is suitable for seed, but the varieties I planted :) are:

        Amish Paste Heirloom
        Black Cherry
        Black Krim
        Floridity
        Golden Sunrise
        New Girl
        Sungella
        Pink Brandywine improved
        Rosada
        Yellow Pear Beams

        (All from Nicky's Nursery seeds)

          PM me your address pls? I'm imaging that when I cut the fruit open there will be oodles of seeds, so I'll send what I can in case any don't make it through your preparation phase, or you want to keep any for another year / swapping.

          How do I prep them for you, is just in kitchen paper enough, or do they need to stay moist in transit?

          Note that these will be straight from the fruit, I don't have time to ferment them so that they are prep'd for sowing, I'm afraid.

          One each of all those marvellous things you post photos of will do me just nicely :heehee:

          Perhaps if you mention something in a post that I take a fancy to I could ask for a cutting :)

          I grew two plants of Black Krim and, unless I labelled them wrongly, one was "Normal sized" - pretty much the same as Shirley - and the other was beefsteak sized. Is this just variability of the seed do you think? Any merit in keeping the seed from the beefsteak one, or is that a common occurrence from seed-grown?

          That's variability I reckon Kristen, I would discard seed from the smaller one. I take it you were not that impressed by the Black Krim in the end then?

            Its tasty, I just don't think that any of the ones I have grown are significantly more tasty (to my palate) than the regular ones I have grown before (e.g. Shirley, Gardeners Delight), but most of them have been late to fruit and lower yielding ... thus I think that growing boring reliable varieties suits me just as well.

            Happy for folk to tell me where I am going wrong in this view though
