Here's an extract of a article by the Editor from the Amateur Gardening Magazine.

"We are gardeners, and as such we take pleasure in controlling the outdoor environment. First we remove unwanted plants [native weeds] then put in a careful selection of varieties. most of them alien to the environment we're placing them in.
So why should we be concerned that European Politicians want to control plants a whole lot more?
A proposed new Plant Reproductive Material Law, if passed, will only allow us to grow varieties that are registered with the EU Plant Variety Agency. It is expected that registering each plant and seed variety with the Agency will be prohibitively expensive for many growers, involving an initial payment and an annual fee.
The law is apparently being introduced to enhance food safety, but its effect could be to seriously limit the range of plants and seeds available to Gardeners. It would also put control of which plants we are allowed to grow into the hands of of Major Agricultural Seed Suppliers.
That's why we should be concerned - the law has to be amended to take Gardeners needs into consideration, or stopped.
Write to your Euro MP [to find out yours go to europarl.org.uk] insisting that this law is dropped. Sign the petition on line at collective-evolution.com and tell gardening friends to do the same.
Do these things, and there is a chance this European law can be stopped. Do nothing and gardening and gardens in the UK could be permanently damaged."

This has been on the "horizon" some time and now appears to be becoming a reality. I'm about to do as asked in the article [and I don't usually sign petitions etc] ............what do you think and what are you going to do.:coffee::dunno::snork:

It's being introduced to enhance multinational profits, isn't it? I'm not sure how they'll enforce it at grass roots level, but resist, resist, resist!
Is there a link to the petition?

Good golly. I agree with respecting invasive plants for an area. But the above sounds like all is to be controlled. I guess they have nothing better to do. And of course it will cost money to controll that and that is more taxes. Next you know they will regulate oxygen.

Really Food Safety???? Hope I am not off the mark, but I am thinking "Food Amount" If a veggie gardner grows lots of tomatoes and just sells for cash then there is no way of keeping track of that money. And the gardner takes away from the food markets who sell tomatoes for a living.
We have that here, farmers are controlled by how much corn they can grow to keep the prices regulated. Some farmers are paid not to grow certain amounts of corn.

next you know people will be boot legging seeds over boarders. Or hushed in smoking quiet corners secretly giving a seed bag to someone. Or Airport security to detect hidden seeds sewn inside hems of skirts. Or bags full of seeds stuffed in orifes. (spel). Or seed drops in vacant fields. or, or, or.

Just read on a Cannabis forum that maintaining registry entries will no doubt prove "prohibitively high"
