Well, thinking ahead I want to get some 'emergency' lighting and wonder if anyone has any recommendations for the brightest/cheapest to run lights? all I have at the moment is a torch, some candles and prayers that the lights will stay on!!

I've got a petrol generator because I got so fed up with the amount of power cuts in my village (also handy at the plot and other places).

You can maintain internet access if you have a mobile broadband dongle, mifi, tablet or smartphone (tethering) with a data sim.

Someone nicked my generator, hope they dropped it on their foot

Glad you said about the dongle. I was going to ask you about that :)

I now prefer a mifi to a dongle as they can be bought for £24 (after cashback, codes, etc.), unlocked for 99p with a code from ebay and then used with a £15 OVIVO sim for permanent (500mb data per month in perpetuity for £15) Vodafone mobile broadband access. If inside a caravan, B&B, canal boat, etc. an external antenna can be stuck out the window (if you have the appropriate model), or simply slipped in a pocket and used with a small tablet for ultimate ease of use.

Any specific requirements for your emergency lighting Val? I just stick to candles (I can live without wifi or the internet for a powercut!)

val go for the cheap battery powered lights you stick under counter tops:
            http://www.amazon.co.uk/Wireless-Un...=1381741181&sr=1-86&keywords=battery+lighting

these guys kick quite a lot of light out for the cheap price you pay any last quite a long time.

if your worrying about what has been in the news lately about the possibility of power cuts this winter, seriously don't worry, at the minute its just the press scare mongering.

If you use a generater, and plug it into your 13amp sockits make sure you switch off the main trip as elec can go back down the line,

Thanks so much for your suggestions, I think I will get some LED lights that I could keep handy.
I am actually a bit scared of power cuts, being suddenly, without any warning, plunged into darkness I find scarey, I'm not bothered about internet connection I am always too concerned about my fish tanks as their heating/filtration stops.

Our supply has been fine, of late, but when we had some work done on the main fuse-board recently I got Sparky to fit an isolator switch for the whole board, and an outside generator "socket" so now I can plug the generator into that and run anything in the house that I choose to. Obviously not a 3-bar fire and the kettle all-at-once!! but I could run the central heating pump etc. as well as PC / some lighting. We have bottle-gas hob which is also handy in a power cut.
