I'm kinda hoping that these are as good as the hype, as I have just bought one.

Its oven cleaning time (again) and this electric fan oven seems to get much dirtier than our old gas ones did; anyway, Mrs C commented on the way home last night that a steam cleaner would be the best thing for shifting the grime easily and keeping it clean; after dropping her off at work this morning, I popped into Homebase and ended up coming home with a Vax one that seems to do just about everything - it has tools for surfaces, carpets, windows, tiles, grout etc etc etc. Also, the idea of cleaning without chemicals appeals.

Anyone got one of these, and any tips to get the best out of it?

I haven't got one but I really want one mostly because I hate cleaning and I've heard that they make cleaning much easier! I'll be watching this thread with interest so hurry up and use it FC and tell us if the one you've bought is any good! :blue thumb:

Well, all I can say is its going to be one of those gadgets that we are going to wonder how we lived without it! Its fantastic.

Admittedly, it has taken me the bulk of the day to clean the oven, even using it, but in all fairness the oven was a right old state after a casserole exploded in there the other night, and in the process of cleaning I leant on the oven door and broke it, so there was a bit of a hiatus while I searched for and ordered spares to fix it!

Suffice to say, that even our embarrassment of an oven has been transformed back to good as new using only this steam cleaner, some cream cleaner, a scourer for the really tough bits, a couple of sponges to rinse away the dirt and copious amounts of hot water.

I even had a wee shot at cleaning the kitchen window with the squeegee attachment - reckon there is a bit of a knack to it, as I left some lines, but its definitely cleaner.

The one I have is a Vax one (just under £100), which comes with a whole load of nozzles and accessories including a cylinder vacuum cleaner style extension pole and brush head for floors.

Funny enough, I did think it would be great for blowing the grime out between the greenhouse panes.....

I reckon it will be great on the old alloy wheels on the car too :)

It's good for killing weeds growing through pavers too FC ....They take a bit of blasting but it works...even though you are advised not to use them outside or with extension leads:whistle:....they don't kill red spider mite though.....

Will it sterilise my Potting Compost? :heehee:

I keep seeing them on Teleshopping when flicking channels - of course everything on those looks like I have to have it ... will be interested to hear your report after you've used it for several different jobs pls :)

It might sterilise your compost, just before blowing it everywhere :heehee: - its got quite a pressure behind it.

I started looking at the wee hand-held jobs, but to be honest the more I looked at them the more impractical and unwieldy they seemed; effectively, they are just kettles with a nozzle on the front, so any real dexterity would be negated. The the other type were the 'mop' type - probably great if you have a house full of hard floors, but next to useless to me; the one I plumped for is a nice blend of the two - it has a tank on wheels, with a hose/wand running off that which attachments are simply popped onto (bayonet fitting) depending on what you want; its also got three extension pieces so you can make a 'mop' style as long as you want it, and it then has a brush head similar to the sort you would get on a cylinder vac.

I get the feeling that these could be one of those products that if you bought either a poor quality one, or one that isn't a Jack-of-all-trades, you'd quickly get disillusioned with it.

My first steam cleaner was one of those. Did what it said it would.

Drawbacks: Large, not easy to store away; ergo, cumbersome to keep to hand and use on a regular basis. Needed to be put on a tray to protect the floor underneath while working with it.
Claims it can be used to steam clean carpets too, FC. Although, from my experience, they may tackle the odd stain, but, for proper carpet cleaning ... I use a carpet cleaner :heehee:
I would argue that it would very much depend on the brand.

I have a cylinder tank version (on wheels). I've given that over to Mr "M" :heehee:
I have a combined "mop/handheld". My 'special' friend right now! :wub2:

I prefer the combi for a number of reasons:
                • easy to store, thus easy to get to and use
                • I need the mop aspect for my floors (pets)
                • the 'hand held' attachment makes it easy to pick up and transport around (downstairs cloakroom vs upstairs bathroom)
                • mop doubles for carpets too (although I won't be using it for that)
                • greater variety of attachments than the wheelie steamer
Ultimately though, it's all down to personal needs and preferences.

I bought a steam cleaner from eBay to clean my black&white tiled hall and kitchen floor. I used to hate getting the mop bucket out. The cleaner is much easier, but not as easy as if it just whizzed around busily by itself while I sat on the sofa. It still has to be stored, the flex dragged around, water refilled, the pads washed, etc. I like the fact that it virtually sterilises the floor, but drying times are still a problem, especially during the winter.

I got a cheap one on eBay to see how I got on with it, next time I would consider getting a more versatile machine. My oven would certainly benefit from an FC once-over!

ha ha - we have one of these and I can tell you they are rubbish! We were given it as a gift from my stepson as he got it cheap through the firm he works for but if I had paid the full price I would be returning it.
