I'm quite annoyed at myself. Until recently I had been smoke free for 2 years. Then one or two things stressed me out all at the same time, and I scrounged a rolly off my dad. Then a couple off my mam's friend, then I started buying my own with the intention of smoking a bit, but then saving it for 'emergencies'.

Didn't work out that way, and in the last couple of weeks or so I've been gradually creeping back up to my old smoking levels.

So be warned fellow quitters. Don't even have one.

Now I'm going to have to fork out for patches again, and go through all the silly mood swings, cold sweats, paranoia and the full set of standard withdrawal symptoms.

I'm going to catch it early though in the hope that it will ease the quitting effort somewhat. I have a 'discussion' to have with the bank tomorrow, and depending on how that goes I will either buy one more pack of baccy, or a box of patches.

Ahhh Clueless, you know what they say about falling off the wagon. You've probably given yourself a slapping like we all do when this happens. :) I've tried many times and failed and am mentally building myself towards another go soon.

      Good luck!

Forgive me for being blunt mate, but the patches only make it harder; if you really want to stop, then you will - no patches, no substitutes, just stop.

I'm not saying for one second that it is easy to do, but you can do it, and doing it without any of these so called 'aids' means that the hard bit is over and done with much faster (a bit like taking a sticking plaster off, get it over with!)

Oh, and don't give yourself unnecessary stress (such as forcing yourself to have a beer free weekend) - bite off one thing at a time, and be nice to yourself (no, not that way, that will make you go blind :nonofinger:)

I know this is going to sound a bit wrong, but the patches worked twice for me.

I just need something to take the edge off. I don't see them as a nicotine substitute, just a will power substitute. See, I don't really have will power. Well I do, right up until something annoys me (which is very, very easy when I'm in withdrawal), and I tend to run off to the shop.

FC, giving up the smokes is easier for some than others, it all depends on your personal addiction level.

You are half way there already, just by identifying where you are likely to fall over, and what you are likely to do - - all you need to do is find a different release instead of running off to the shop - singing at the top of your lungs, running to the top of the nearest hill, swimming twenty lengths of the local pool; whatever works for you really.

I know its not easy, I really do (I was unbearable each and every time I was quitting, and I am grumpy at the best of times), but just remember that each craving, individually, lasts a couple of minutes (three, tops), so all your will power to last for is that three minutes; Sure, the cravings will be close together at the start, but as you get each one out of the way you get closer and closer to success; and also as each one gets out of the way, they will get further and further apart.

Also, don't forget that you can go to bed and sleep for anything between six and eight hours, and your body doesn't wake you up with the need for nicotine - so you can last longer than you think without it.

Of course, you are right Sheal - however, I cannot help but think that there is a hell of a lot of money being made out of selling people a product that essentially prolongs their agony

I've tried the hard way FC and it doesn't work for me. It isn't a case of minutes or days it's weeks and on one occasion in the past thoughts of suicide through desperation. Giving up is the easy bit for me, controlling withdrawal is another.

Fair point Sheal, and if patches etc do work for you, then that is great - - better that, than nothing working. I just feel that they are almost the 'default' nowadays, without people even considering toughing it out for a while.

I'm not totally against them, and my heart goes out to anyone quitting smoking - been there, done that and I know it is one of the hardest things you can do.

Yes the patches do work for me, however as you said earlier you then have to give those up. It's hard and I've not got past the 'three month' mark but with my next attempt, that isn't far away, I'll be trying a new strategy.

What I don't understand is these new cigarette replacement electronic things. Surely the habit is pretty much part of the problem and I think these won't help because 'mentally' you're still smoking and handling a false cigarette, I can't see how that works.

Good Luck with the packing up Clueless and hope the patches work for your kids sake at least.:blue thumb:

My hubby smoked ciggies and then a pipe from the age of 18 much to the annoyance of his parents {even though his mum had been a smoker at one point}and even with me trying to get him to pack in the pipe and the hospital advising him he would stand a better chance of fathering kids if he packed up he refused:frown:

Even after I developed Bronchitis {even the dog wheezed}he still wouldn't pack it in until two years later out of the blue he told me he was going to try patches through the nurse at our surgery.I am pleased to say six years on{he is now 62} he has beaten his addiction and although I still get the Bronchitis from time to time he has never touched a pipe/ciggie {he let me throw everything away}and the house no lon ger stinks of pipe smoke or looks like the house is full of smog:snork:

Please reconsider taking it up as it will benefit you greatly and your sons won't have their lungs clogged up with all those chemicals:eeew:

Oh Clueless get the patches, the only one that worked for me was the Niquitin, clear are the best for some odd reason, all the others gave me nightmares.

Make yourself think, is having a ciggie going to help the problem, no it will probably make it worse, financially.

It will only detriment your health, and you have 2 children to consider.

Myself and another G.C. member message each other with little support notes, we both quit about the same time, and we tell each other how we are going, and what we have bought (for our gardens of course) with the money we saved.

The hard milestones for me were,
                          1 month, I wanted a reward.
                          3 months, I deserved a reward.
                          6 months , I was entitled to a reward.

Each time I had to make myself think, the first few would taste foul,
Look at my bank (healthy) balance.
No cough, and if I get a cold it`s usually just a slight sniffle.
My home and me ,smell fresher, I really notice now how peoples clothes can smell horrid.

If you need p.m. me. xxxxxxxxxx

I got the patches free from my doctor when I gave up, a few years back. It is a really hard thing to do but so worth it in the long run. Falling off the wagon is normal and heaps of people do it so don't beat yourself up and stress yourself out even further over it. Just get back on the wagon when you feel you are ready. I still miss smoking. I really enjoyed it. I have to remind myself of all the benefits of not smoking on a fairly regular basis. So, good luck and remember we are all behind you when you are ready. :)
