Maybe not the best pic but does anyone recognise this? It popped up this summer and I have no memory of planting it! May have been another from my mixed seeds packet. The leaves seemed to be very attractive to hungry insects whatever it is.

That is Enchanters Nightshade.. Pull it up is my advice & get the roots out as it will take over very quickly if allowed to seed... ;)

Does it have an extensive network of very white roots?

    Yes!
On the very long white roots it has tiny nodes.
    It is a complete pest.
We had a little in our old garden.
I thought I could get rid of it by weeding. I never let it seed.
It pulls up well in the light leaf mould ...BUT it just kept covering a bigger every year.
I believe any snapped roots left in the soil regrow.
I think a spray may be the only answer.

We've had every type of bee this year - including black ones which I'd never seen before. Don't mind them doing a bit of leaf munching - rather have that than no bees

Thanks silver surfer - I shall be doing lots of root digging tomorrow then! I thought it was a pretty plant as well - one day I'll be able to tell weeds from flowers :lunapic 130165696578242 5:
