Think the press I looked at was £119, not looked at pulping stuff yet.

Our village has a community press and a shredder for chopping apples.

                    Aye up @Zigs

Sounds like an interesting project. I don't mind a drop or two of the nectar myself;)

Maybe you could enlighten us as to how many apples would be needed to make it worthwhile? Also, is it imperative to use a certain type of apple? I presume the left over pulp is useful for something?

                    Cheers...Freddy

                    Alright Freddy, how be on?:)

You'll need a fair few, 50/50 mixture of cookers and eaters will do if you can't get cider apples.

Pomage is fed to pigs after pressing

According to the video link to Huw's Nursery that Ziggy posted, 20 to 30 lbs should yield about a gallon of juice. At a guess that will be about 3 average buckets.

At present I'm dumping about 15-20 lbs of pears on the compost heap every day. We're storing some but really ought to juice the rest.

@Freddy You should get about 70% juice by weight of apples pressed, but as apple juice is heavier than water having an approx Specific Gravity of 1.040 a gallon of juice weighs 10.4 lbs so I assume two thirds of the weight of whole apples divided by 10 will give the number of gallons of juice to be expected.(as it's a much simpler calculation and less than 2% out)

Working that in reverse gives 15lbs of the best apples and perhaps 20lbs for not so good apples for a gallon of juice that costs about £4 - £5 if buying in cartons from a supermarket.
