    A 4wd is not totally necessary Dave but they seem to be the only cars that give the height between ground and car body. The track is muddy and as the car will be using the mountain road (high ground) to and from work there's also ice/snow to take into account although we don't get much here. :)

    I'd concur with the advice that Jimny's are not robust in the least - Vitara's aren't either, I'm afraid; an ex neighbour of mine had two of them in the time we knew him, and he never seemed to be done fixing stuff back on or spending money on them;

    The ultimate, un-killable 4x4 has to be the Toyota HiLux; I've driven/used a number of these over the years and they just keep going no matter what. I have even used one to drag fallen trees away to clear blocked roads, and also used them to plug through mud pretty much up to the axles - the only 4x4 that are better in my book are the Land Rovers and the Range Rovers.

    Curve ball choice - what about the Kia Sportage? They have been around for a while, are generally tough as old boots and the older models are simple to work on and put right when they go wrong? There is a Hyundai version of the same vehicle, but I cannot for the life of me recall the model name.

    Or, the other one that is well worth looking at (even the fairly old ones) are the Mitsubishi Shogun - diesels available, cannot kill them with a big stick, and second only to Land Rovers in the sticky/slippery stuff.

    PS - now't wrong with a Nissan X-Trail or an old Land Rover either, although the Landies aren't to everyone's taste.

      FC......Thanks, we'll check out the Kia Sportage and see if we can track down the Hyundai. :)

      Jack......now there's a thought! A local farmer used to use a Panda to round up his sheep in the fields. :)

      The older Fiat Panda 4x4 were surprisingly good in the slippy stuff - I'm not so sure about the newer ones, but I can see no reason why they wouldn't be at least as good. The only slight downside is that they are Fiats and not exactly known for reliability.

      What about a Subaru Forester? They are a firm favourite with farmers as they give a car like ride and accommodation whilst being happy to plug through the mud and carry the odd sheep or three in the back.

        Fiat Panda..... as with all these small cars, known in my family as a 'pasty warmer'. :biggrin: Sorry, no offence meant to anyone that owns one.

        FC..... The word Suburu, sounds expensive to me. :)

          Hi Sheal , for a second low price get to work car the Jimny is great. They use them as hire cars on the Greek islands and they are pretty reliable. Sounds a good choice to me !!! Its not a 4 x 4 get you up mount Snowdon type of motor , but down a bumpy farm track it will be fine.

            Can you ask the owners of the track to fill in the potholes

            4x4 are not much more heigher an most cars, yes the body work is heigher off the ground but the running gear isn't much heigher unless it's on big wheels, the height of the axle and the towbar is the wrost bit

              Totally agree, the other suggestions are going to prove far too expensive for a second car!! A Jimny is a great little car, I almost bought another but was tempted but the zero tax on the Aygo.

                        The track is attached to the farmland that my husbands new boss owns. He actually owns a machine to level it but lent it out to another farmer some while ago and hasn't got it back yet. :doh:Now, considering how slowly things can work here, the track is not going to be sorted out anytime soon, if at all. :)
