lol will do! As a before shot, this rather drab and depressing (and embarrassing because it's still quite messy) looking space is what I want to transform (there's a brighter patio round the back but I don't want to give up on the side):

The winter plants are the start, but in the summer I'll do more. My biggest problem is a neighbouring tree that blocks out most light, but I can cut it back.

      Welcome to Gardeners Corner :sign0016:

You could pay a visit to Kew for inspiration too, and RHS Wisley, M25 > A3.

I had a bit like that in the UK, Jack. Nailed some OSB board over the fence and painted a mural from a holiday photo with lots of blue sky and lemon trees:) It improved the view from the kitchen window no end and AFAIK is still there 20 years later....

Thanks Noisette! That's a great idea, I can be a dab hand with a paint brush sometimes too.

Shame you aren't closer to me, I've got a Sarcococca Confusa and a Viburnum Tinus you could have taken off my hands.

Aw thanks anyway :) I finally got around to buying two Viburnum Tinus plants today, I've just potted them into larger pots that should see them for a while. The area is coming along now. Bulbs planted, the two Viburnum's and some winter pansies planted. It's looks more cheerful already :)

I thought I'd do a quick update with a photo - I took the advice on the Vibernum Tinus last year and I'm really glad I did! They looked great all over Christmas with the buds and they've just burst open making a dull corner lively.

I added a few extra plants this week, including transplanting some cyclamen into window boxes at the back. I've also just added some summer plants including hostas, ferns and a honeysuckle. There's more to do through the year to complete this area but I'm pleased with the start :)

I'll revisit this thread in the autumn to add a few more of your suggestions. I love dogwood, they look very Christmassy.
