(Figures made up for effect but near enough)

I used to go on about the young ones, roaming the streets and drinking
Then one day the truth hit home, the local schools have 3k children, Just
the same 40 or so roam around drinking and drunk

Alcohol pricing, just punishes the great and the good, Work all week, relax at the weekend with a quite drink at home, priced to subsidise the shop, The dossers usually steal it anyway

Aye Jack, but isn't it a great sound bite to the masses as an excuse to raise taxes!

Does anyone look at the reasoning behind their drinking at such a young age?

As a point of interest. With the decline in smoking in recent years more people seem to be drinking. Is this related do you think? And does it prove that people need something to 'lean on', when something is in effect taken away they find something else to take it's place?

Possibly, but as many of those who are affected are working their cobs off whilst paying a fortune in tax and are watching public services going to wrack and ruin (whilst no money is being saved in reality), and bankers lurch from one stitch up to another, is it any wonder that people turn to something to relax and take their mind off things?

I don't disagree but has it ever been any different? We always come back to the politicians just talking without changing other than the level of taxes. Usually upwards.
That said, this was an underage drinking thread and I don;t see anywhere in any plans any proof of cause or consequent justification of raising prices.

No different thirty years ago when I was a kid! To be fair I was a lot more sneaky about it as my parents would have gone ape if they knew that I was drinking and getting stoned. And without a shadow of doubt I knew from the age of thirteen that I was immortal - paying for all the broken bones now though.

I do though think that it is not an outsiders place to interfere in the parents ideas on raising their children. So if you buy booze for a child then the punishment should be enforced. Likewise, if the parent is supplying their sprogs enough booze to get legless, by law they should be present to ensure the childs safety.

Basically (IMO), under age drinking is part of growing up. During my little brothers era the local copper took over the license at the local football club. He allowed the youth of the village to buy drinks and get drunk at the club on Friday and Saturday nights on the proviso that their parents were aware of it and gave it the ok. His train of thought was that if they did it in the village close to home it was a far safer environment than going into the local town to do the same "without a protective arm around their shoulder".

Remember the old Radio Grams? Huge cabinet that had to house all the valves & stuff. When electronics came in the cabinets were the same size but mostly empty. Easy enough to unscrew the back cover & brew a gallon of wine in it. Parents were oblivious.

I've thought of it. So have you, and I bet we're not the only ones. The trouble is nobody will listen to the likes of you and I unless we either set up a charity or get a paper degree in some subject, then read lots of reports written by other people, pick out the bits we like, and quote it as gospel in our own report.

I did the whole under age drinking thing, along with my mates. At the time I would have put it down to nothing more than having a bit of fun at the weekend, which really it was but I think in hindsight there were underlying reasons that now seem fairly obvious. In my little group, nobody felt really secure. All of our dads had either already been laid off, or were face the threat of it, the news was full of tales of infighting on a level that was practically civil war, and at school the teachers seemed to take great delight in repeatedly telling us that there was nothing for us and nor would there be for the foreseeable future. I don't think we drank specifically to escape all that. I don't think we were particularly stressed or worried about anything. I think we just saw it as a relaxing, jolly good blowout at the end of yet another week of same old same old mundanity. Get smashed out of our brains, break the odd bone (of our own - we were not aggressive), accumulate a few funny stories, pluck up the courage to ask out a lass that was way out of our league, take a dump in the drunkest mate's shoe and then giggle til tears rolled down our faces when they unwittingly put it back on, etc etc etc, then sober up on sunday ready for another week of mundanity, of people telling us repeatedly that we're worthless and doomed.
