Raised decking

My wife's had the idea of removing our dining room window and putting in a pair of doors, then do a raised deck area, it will be about 14'x10' and look out over our garden and pond.

Bear in mind decking can get very slippery and will need more a lot more maintenance than other surfaces. You could consider a patio made of brick or stone instead.

 

We have to put in a raised deck as there's a 18" drop from when we fit the doors, we already have a flagged patio area that we iterated when we bought the house and we both hate it

 

Sounds like great idea.

Did she say when she would be starting.

 

That's funny that my missus has the same idea for a decked patio area at the bottom of our garden (southwest facing).

It's not a bad idea to be honest but it's a lot of work because it slopes

 

My wife is great at coming up with extra work for me, the only thing she helps me with when I'm doing any work is brewing up, I wish she would stop watching those programmes about doing up your house

 

Agree with the above - we put raised decking all round the outside at the back and it does need a lot of work - cleaning, painting it with preservative etc and it gets very slippery when it's wet. Still prefer it to paving though

 

I've seen some decking boards with artificial grass on them....don't know how they fair but worth a look if it's decking you want

 

Will post some pictures of were its going to be built.

 

My personal thoughts are that decking originated in other parts of the world with a different climate, I must admit it looks nice,..........for a year or two.

 

I know that, you know that, try telling my wife.

 

Show her the screen, then suggest a nice pair of patio doors opening into a conservatory.

 

Only problem I have is that the drains run underneath and im not sure how far down the footings would go down in the ground
