It's a long while since the Green finches have visited my garden(apologies for the fuzzy pic)

Never short on Stoggies though

 

Strange, not had a stoggie for over a month now and no Greenfinches since last Spring.

 

Same here, no greenfinches and very limited goldfinch numbers. Bird visitors are appreciably lower than last year,

I've always got plenty of Stoggies in the garden...have had several nests full of squeakers this year too...the Green Finches are the first i've seen for a couple of years...

There was a Nightjar here last night, couldn't see him obviously but found this clip.

 

Flocks of redwings have returned to us in the last week. They like to stand on the top of neighbours' ash trees at the end of our garden. Unfortunately the heavy cloudy sky throughout the week made the photos I took of them rather dull and boring, really did not do justice to the true colours of the birds. Today, however, with the blue sky, is a different story. Here are a couple of photos





While I was taking pictures of the redwings this hedge sparrow landed nearby

 

Lots of goldfinches here with plenty of great tits and blue tits. There are a few greenfinches and dunnocks. The magpies fly in from time to time but are barred from the bird tables as they eat everything. Huge flocks of starlings swoop in around the same time every morning chattering and squarking. The robin spends most of the day in and out of the garden. There has been a couple of song thrushes eating the berries on the whitebeam with the blackbirds. Even a few feral pigeons eat them. The chaffinches visit through the day. At the moment I can hear the long tailed tits flying over...they come down for the fat balls but never stay long. I usually see some house sparrows by now but I've yet to see any.

I rarely see wood pigeons and collared doves.....usually only in harsh weather. If I'm lucky, that's when I see yellow wagtails, grey wagtails, pied wagtails and woodpeckers. Living close to a canal helps I think.

 

I can take a camera and telephoto lens to the plot every day for a week and have the Red Kites (and a Hen Harrier last week) take off as soon as they see me coming, but when you only have a pocket camera with you, they stay put.

We do get a huge variety of birds in our garden. All the tits and most of the finches, robins, collared doves, woodpeckers, blackbirds, thrushes etc. Also a couple of little moorhens come up from the riverbank. Love their funny little mad-dash walk as they scurry up and down the garden

 

Green with envy Scrungee, there is not much chance of seeing one here as they are only just starting to move into Dorset.
