Absolutely. Although listening to what your clientele is in the market for will mean you are making things that have more commercial appeal - knocking up 100 all different for the Christmas trade and only selling half a dozen would make me rather despondent ...

Those chillies are on drawers that are quite small. I reckon a Carrot-handle on shed door could be a fair size - something I could wrap my whole hand around to then pull on the door? Dunno if that would enable it to be strong enough though?

Cutting it in half and gluing it back together sandwiching an embedded T-shaped steel rod seems like a lot of hassle. Deluxe Model perhaps? :heehee:

    Our loss

I said I would only not be able to come next year. There's always the year after. :)

I again agree. I am open to ideas but I don't like the way people have been saying to me "I love that, but can you make me one without painting it and slightly smaller" The wood I have dictates what I make most of the time and finding bits that are identical in size and type isn't always going to happen.

I reckon so. I will certainly look into it shortly.

I think to pieces of rod screwed in at either end should do it. Dave has loads of this knocking around.

As luck would have it a tree surgeon has been working next door cutting the neighbour's silver birch down slightly this morning. Grabbed his attention and have taken a large amount of the logs. He says that he will bring round a load of hardwoods for me free of charge when he's in the area from now on as it's not worth his while to sell it as fire wood. Turns out Silver birch is a dream to carve too.

Silver birch is good but how long do you have to store it in order to let it dry properly?

You need to get used to people asking for things a 'bit different' and have your answer down pat. You need to, immediately, say "I can try, but the pattern and grain of the wood dictates the size and exact shape. This makes each one a unique carving. Would you still like me to make it (or them) for you?"

The words you use are important. You should say 'would you' instead of 'do you', and 'still like' instead of 'still want'. The connotation of similar words has a different effect on people. 'Would' is a 'soft' choice and 'Do' is a hard choice. It seems to give them more options and is less pushy. Using the word 'like' is, subconsciously, having a good effect upon them.

A year. But I don't have a problem with that. We have a workshop full of offcuts that I would like to use up in the meantime. I'm also buying really cheap offcuts of Oak from my local woodyard too, so I won't run out of wood in the meantime. Dave is interested in bits and pieces of it as well so he's see it as a good thing to construct an outdoor storage/ drying stage around the back of the workshop. I now have a contact as well who says he will drop other bits of logs/timber off in the future (although I do wonder if this will happen but we will wait and see)

Some helpful advice there. I suppose I just need to get used to people asking me to make things for them. Usually I just make stuff for myself or as gifts for others, so I have complete control. I had no idea that certain words have different effects subconsciously. But it does make sense too.

I should also do a WIP for my latest project for my Aunt for Christmas.

Dave built himself a crude woodturning lathe from an old drill lathe he picked up from a bootfair. Bought an old bench drill for £30, took the motor out and mounted it. (The rest of the Bench drill will be put among the plants as a garden feature) This was it's first outing. Dave and I took turns to reduce a piece of 3x3 to a cylindrical shape.

My first wood turning project is almost finished. It's a lighthouse for my Aunt's new bathroom. Couldn't think what else to get her for Christmas.

Lovely JJ. It immediately reminded me of one close by at Beachy Head, Eastbourne

I'm not so sure if she will as she's quite fussy tbh. I think I overdid the distressed look. Doesn't matter anyway, it cost me absolutely nothing to build.

                  :heehee:

I actually based it on this lighthouse I remember as a kid but used a bit of artistic license on it.

No I'm not I'm afraid (wish I was though). I went there on holiday once when I was a kid and for some reason it stuck in my mind since then. Not sure why though. I had no idea that East Ruston Vicarage was nearby.
