I've just heard that the Government is getting rid of the actual Car Tax disc and replacing it with an electronic method. What that electronic method is I have no idea:dunno::doh::scratch: but they are are supposed to be allow the Car Tax by monthly Debit Order if wanted.:coffee::snork:

Number plate recognition systems? There's cameras all over the place.

I suppose in this electronic age they are superfluous, what will happen to all the motor tax depts then, up until about 2 years ago if we had any query we used to go to the D.V.L.A. 12 or so miles away, then after spending a fortune on a swish reception they stopped the public going there and opened an office in Llansamlett in another brand new building.
I would think paying car tax by direct debit is a good idea, we pay everything else and the only large bill nowadays is the car expenses. It may cut down on the dodgers who cannot find say 100 pounds for 6 months but would pay 20 a month with ease.

I agree Freddy I believe even the traffic wardens can tell if your tax and insurance is paid up with their gadgetry.

I believe that they are saying it's too expensive to print the actual discs but I think that's just a cover for moving into being able to track every car and it's movements. I always pay my Annual Car Tax with the Post Office so that's another task and source of revenue that they've lost.:coffee:

A disc in the windscreen verifies the vehicle had an MOT and Insurance within the last 12 months and that it has been registered with DVLC so confirming the Registration Number is valid. All that 'at a glance'. Without valid discs being displayed it would require patrolling police to check every single registration online. I forsee lots more dodgy motors on the roads, or the need for a massive increase in NPR cameras.

Surely it would have been sensible to keep the 'disc' requirement at some nominal charge and put the rest of the cost on fuel?

And a valid disc in the windscreen gives some indication to anybody getting into a car whether it's legal or not.

As if the Government needs encouragement to slap another tax on the Fuel bill:dunno::heehee:

I would rather they tax pasties instead, but there's lots of pensioners with old cars who only use them for a weekly shop and church on Sundays but they pay more VED than those who can afford modern cars with costs linked to emissions who drive over 10 x as many miles p.a.

I have a 1926 Triumph Model 'P' 500 cc single side valve which by the way is tax free (and just recently MoT free also [seen on the left]). The only reason I have a front number plate is that the tax disk is mounted on the rear end. Modern bikes have been without the front number plate (the powers that be think the front number plate on a bike sliding along the road might nick the leg of a pedestrian). To remove the number plate would detract from the whole look of the bike.

            Cheers, Tony.

I'm pretty sure all of this can be checked automatically these days, there are cameras everywhere.

So what happened to the "shop" a driver campaign?

How can we report those tax dodgers if there are no tax discs?

It was a matter of time really - the fact that there are electronic systems in place that already know whether your car is taxed, MOT'd or insured, so that coupled with the cost of printing (and posting) the tax discs makes it look like a sensible move.

I'd imagine that there would be a telephone service for those who don't have access to a PC, and to be honest the direct debit idea appeals - lessens the risk of someone falling foul and ending up with a fine if they are in hospital or on holiday.

It would be a lot fairer if it was added to fuel, there would be no dodgers, drivers from abroad would have to pay it, whereas currently they pay nothing for using our roads, and if you only drive a couple of thousand miles a year, you won't be paying a fortune for something you don't use much.

I agree, but just how would they work it out.
I bet we would "all" end up paying more.
