I need glasses for reading, used to just get the Primark ones but thought I should upgrade to a proper prescription. I've had some lovely glasses from this online firm.

    http://www.eye-sale.com/

They almost always have special offers making the cost of a basic lens pair about £25. For that you get a lovely pair of designer frames. I was nervous about buying online to start with but there are all sorts of tips for getting a suitable frame etc. There was a problem with one pair (sent with plain glass) but it was rectified very professionally. You have to have an eye test and a prescription from a non-virtual optician first, though, obviously.

If you have a very simple prescription like me I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.

            Aye - I've got that; described to me as my eyes being rugby ball shaped as opposed to football shaped as they should be;

re Specsavers - the results you get are entirely dependant on the branch. I have a sneaky feeling that they are all independents running under a franchise (a bit like the Sony Centres and McDonalds); we used to use Specsavers in Hounslow (not great) tried Kingston (glasses made matters worse) and now we use Staines (fantastic)

            They are independents under franchise
They admitted this to me, when I asked about the price, one branch quoted me £320, and my local quoted £480, I asked why a national company had different prices/offers

So they told me, then said they would match the offer

My maternal Grandfather, was a leading eye surgeon and ophthalmic optician, all his sons (my Uncles were opticians)
When it came to Grand children IE:- Me, I did not have the brains to qualify to UNI, So ended up swabbing decks for a living :-)

It was looking good for a while, when Grand father was 82, and the rest had gone, leaving my brother and I to inherit the eight shops (now Dollond & Aitchison aka Boots)
But he married his 33 year old receptionist, six months before he croaked it :-(

I shouldn't really criticise specsavers. My only first hand experience of them was when I took a voucher from work that entitled me to a free eye test. If you work with computers as the main part of your job, your employer has to pay for the eye test.

The law also says that if you need glasses primarily for your job using computers, your employer has to pay upto a certain amount (it was £60 then) towards any glasses that you need.

My employer at the time had a deal with specsavers, which is why I had to go there (you could go elsewhere, but the paperwork was different, involving expenses claims and red tape), and I got the distinct impression that specsavers were very much playing by the 'rules' when they did the eye test and then prescribed 'reading glasses' but not glasses for using the computer. The young lady got very shifty when I asked if she could just say they were for my job so I wouldn't have to pay, almost like she knew something that she wasn't allowed to say, but that could have just been my interpretation of the situation.

My new boss is the polar opposite. I said I was going for an eye test and she said to bring in a receipt. I told her honestly that I had no intention of asking her to pay for it because at the end of the day, fair's fair, my eyes haven't changed since she employed me, but she insisted, so I'll take the receipt in on Monday, but not actually mention it unless she asks.

Clueless, you said that she did some very thorough tests.

Did she ask you to cough? :)

                    Glad everything's good @clueless1
Your eyes are the most precious thing that you have, take it from me since having a corneal transplant in the right eye 5 years ago and on the verge of waiting for one in the left.
I go to a special opticians which specialises in corneo-scleral lenses he is excellent.
I could do it through the NHS for free but get messed about too much.
I'd rather pay and have piece of mind and that customer care.

My eyes are indeed precious, but they're not the most precious things I have. I can see three people in the room that I'm in now, each one infinitely more precious than any part of my flesh and bones:)
