    I'm rather fascinated by Adam's PVA drinking proclivities. Must try it sometime. I'm sure it would be possible to form a pie case out of PVA (pour some into a pie mould, swill it round, leave to set, simples) that could be used in blind tasting comparison tests with Mr Kipling's pies.
    .
    Wonder if anyone's listed them by calorie content? 225 calories, similar to a small choc bar except you would get far better value out of that in terms of eating time.

    Choc bar= as much as 5 mins if you spin it out in small pieces.
    Mince pie= only 5 seconds if you're really greedy

    Mince pies go back a lonnnnnng way! There's a record of them being served up to King Henry V in 1413. They did used to contain meat in those days as meat then was sometimes preserved with fruit, spices and alcohol to make it last longer. They were also bigger than they are now. Over time the amount of meat was reduced until it became the fruit only mix we have today and the pies became smaller over time too.

      Son in Law, fancies baking etc, and last year produced Victorian Mince pies, mincemeat and Minced steak, They were different, quite nice actually

        Bought mincemeat is always to sweet, So this year decided to make my own, I started couple of months ago by tipping half a bottle of cheap rum onto a kilner jar of raisins left for about 2 months, then I added chopped cox apples /grated carrot/cranberries/stem ginger/yellow sultanas/candied peel/ some mixed spice, /Atoria suet grated Orange zest, you could use home made marmalade. No sugar was needed. Then I cooked it for 10 mins allowed to cool . bottled it up I have 6lb jam jars tucked away in the pantry! the longer you keep it the better it is. I do cheat I use bought pastry...not very good at pastry:)

            I had to laugh, I was reading a copy of the Metro free paper in the parcels office yesterday and it was full of letters complaining about people who hang about the reduced fridge in supermarkets and only ever have reduced items in their baskets.

            Proud warriors in the consumer's battle, I call us, perhaps you'll agree, Scrunge?

            I haven't made my own but I do soak chopped glace cherries in Amaretti for 24 hours and put 2 pieces in the bottom of each base, then top up with Robertson - with extra raisins and sultanas. I've fallen in love with Jus rol puff pastry sheets this year and only make them in consume within 24 hours little batches . The tops often topple over as the pastry rises too much but you can glue them back on easily enough but not too tight. Gotta be able to smack a wadge of Rum / Brandy butter in one before you scoff.

            ps - same with mini sausage rolls in puff pastry. I spread the inside of the case with Maille whole grain mustard first. Eat same day as bake...

              Especially as they were £1.50 and BOGOF in Tesco (ends today) and they counted as 'dairy' so you could use a £3 off £12 spend on 'dairy' and it keeps getter better because you only needed to spend £12 pre-BOGOF, so only 8 (8 x £1.50) required in your basket, then if you 'accidently' slipped a £2 off Tesco Finest cheese voucher in with the others you would find that somehow Tesco had deemed jus-rol pastry was finest cheese and would get another £2 off. And finally the packs of pastry had a code to enter online and 7 codes gets a £5 shopping gift card (av. 71p/pack cash back).

              The calculation is 8 packs for £6 (after BOGOF) less £3, less £2 = £1, then less £5.58 (8 x 71p) giftcard cash back, so paid £4.58 to take 8 packs of pastry home from Tescos, which works out as being paid 57p for each pack of pastry. We bought ours in lots of 8, followed by 6 with some extra dairy stuff to keep them in mutiples of 7. It's also helped us use some of those 'spend and save' vouchers that Tesco have been sending us, getting the cost down even further. We even had a couple of '50 points when you buy Jus-rol pastry' vouchers.

                @Scrungee , I couldn't handle that amount of puff pastry - not in a year would I need that much. There's only us 2 at home. I only shop for the day really and cannot think very far ahead as to what we will be eating. Next week seems a long way off,

                  We think a long time ahead and also make stuff to repay favours - such as giving a bottle or 2 of our own pressed pasteurised apple juice together with some home made apple pies. It really does help if we can also get the pastry for free.

                  Morrisons around 2:00 am was the place to be yesterday as they were reducing every perishable item that needed to be sold/used by 26 December down to only 9p each and we got a vast haul. As we were grabbing big bags of bread rolls Mrs Scrungee held up a packet of Mr Kripling Mince Pies going for only 9p and we both laughed and left them there.

                    Well done there! I was in Waitrose and bagged two fresh turkeys that were wildly reduced. I sold one to a friend as it wouldn't fit in my oven.
