What are you going to grow "New to you" for 2014

Hi All

I always try and grow something new I haven't before or have another go .... to achieve better

2013 all with great success.
Alstroemeria (RocknRoll hasnt flowerd yet but hopefully 2014 would like a few more and plants have really bulked up)
Caladium (would grow again but not many varieties here in the UK made a great house plant)
Sandersonia (hard to get viable tubers for next year to flower but I will wait and see)
Colocasia ( Amazing huge leaves and was the talking point of the garden when friends came around )
climbing courgette 100% will grow again in the greenhouse they never stopped producing and don't take up that much space when tied in regularly picked the last ones in November.

I would like to try "Delphiniums" failed so many times to get a good flower spike , and a "show Begonia" tubers are a little pricey but I have xmas £

I grew several varieties from seed last year - but snails munched the seed trays :( Although they recovered, remarkably!, that set them back so this year will be the first year the plants put on a reasonable show.

Some F1's amongst that list which should come true from seed, and look to have reasonable height / performance. I'll tell you later this year if the wait was worthwhile!

Not in the same league as Blackmore and Langdon ... cheaper though!

I struggled to grow mine to a decent enough size to enjoy. Mind you, I'm not much good with Colocasia either, so I expect I need to give them a lot more attention and TLC than I have done ...

Mine came from Anglia Bulbs. Dunno if they have more varieties than you found, the 4 they have seem to be the ones most available in UK

Begonia Sutherlandii Bulbils

 

Spruce , I have grown B. Sutherlandi from bulbils about 5 years ago ( when I didn't know what bulbils were ! ) Lovely small orange flowers , which may make a good houseplant. My sisters is still growing I think . Easy to grow from tubers.

 

New for 2014 on my planting plan , not too many and nothing exotic . In fact I am trying to cut back on the number of seeds I plant , then I don't have the "where the heck can I put these now!" crisis as you run out of windowsills , before you can safely move out to the GH.

Salvia coccinea 'Summer Jewel Red' - I really like the S. Coccinea , they bloom through until late October and look really nice around the Canna's . This is a new variety to me.
Commelina coelestis "Alba" - Seeds kindly donated by Longk They look great on Google , hope mine do.
Sweet pea royal family lavender - I have had a hate hate relationship with SP's over the last few years . Got quite a good show last year , so I am trying this Royal Family range for 2014
Petunia Explorer F1 - High performing , high quality trailing petunia developed in Japan , well that's what it says on the packet !

 

planning on a few blueberry shrubs and lavender plants to go into my heath and heather slope. I don't care if the birds eat all the blueberries, just want it for the flower scent.

 

I'm planning on trying more grafting of Tomatoes and going to give a Tomtato a go plus a Cuetato just for the hell of it

 

Think I might try some sweet corn and I also have a little raised bed that I will try and turn onto a cut flower bed. No looked into it too much yet so not sure what I will put in at the moment.

I have absolutely nothing planned for next year, I haven't looked at any seed catalogues yet either. Time to get my finger out I think!

 

@Spruce - if Alstros are to be your thing I thoroughly recommend giving its climbing cousin Bomarea a go.....................

As far as Sandersonia goes, I got goodly sized tubers from Anglia Bulbs last year. Try not to over-water them as I did though!

 

Must try and sort that out then!!!!!

Almost everything that I'm growing from seed is new to me. I'm going for Salvia in a big way, and the Mediterranean/Balkan Digitalis too.

There are a few other potential highlights to look forward to as well;
Hopefully my Cubanola will finally bloom this year.
Isoplexis isabelliana is still looking good and I'm confident that they will bloom next year.
Musschia wollastonii.
Hopefully my Ferraria crispa will bloom this spring. Also have seed for four other species, one of which is germinating.

 

All the Cryptostegia grandiflora seed germinated, so if Wiki is right, there won't be much room for anything else Waiting for Tacca chanterei, Acacia mearnsii and a couple of Musa species to sprout. Then (stop me when you get bored) Sideritis syriaca (sounds more like a disease), Salvias cyanescens and dolichantha, Physoclaina orientalis, Heloniopsis orientalis, Globularia bisnagarica, Erodium tordylioides, Dracocephalum imberbe, Alonsoa 'Pink Beauty' and Passiflora popenovii. The last one is a surprise! Don't remember ordering that, so either it's a freebie or I'd had a petit rouge too many
Then there are the perennials that I grew before and am having another go at....
A big thanks here to everyone who wrote about germinating seeds on kitchen roll in plastic bags. It's going to revolutionise my propogation habits
