Can you get fit after 40?

    Give up smoking when its the hardest time to do so, that way it only gets easier.
    Put the money in a jar and watch it fill up.
    Most of all, tell yourself, you are a non smoker, dont mess around with "I'm giving it up".
    You just dont smoke, simple, but it aint easy.

      I gave up smoking 30 years ago,one tip I was given was to suck dried pea's when I fancied a smoke.It was hard at first,I would say that's a day without the weed,then 2 and 3 and so forth. After a month some one gave me a cigar,I took about 4 good drags on it was then as sick as could be,that was the end of my smoking days.Am I any richer for it,No,because I got into model railways and my allotment. It was the best thing that I did.

        Quitting smoking is easy if you're in the right frame of mind when you do it. I should know, I've done it twice:)

          Whereas if you smoke you end up looking as if you are permanently sucking a dried pea!

          Clueless1 I gave up several times before the last time. Hang on in there.

              I've given up four times:rolleyespink:....going to try and cut down though....i know i can't promise myself to quit altogether ATM simply because i enjoy a smoke....totally the wrong attitude but that's the reason i haven't stayed stopped:doh:

                I don't think I would describe myself as an ex-boozer, rather I thought it was starting to become a habit so I gave up. So now I don't not-drink, I just choose not to drink :)

                  My advice is to take it slowly and slowly change your lifestyle. Most people make new years resolutions and try to change everything in one go, exercise, quit smoking and diet all at the same time. Then give up a month later.

                  Try to start in small manageable steps. (I have never smoked or drunk so can't advise on that but with the exercise and diet I can help with.) Walking isn't really going to shift the weight as much as say biking does. Could you commute to work via bike instead of walking or driving? Take the family out for a bike ride? It's a small change that has massive benefits for your fitness levels and heart rate.

                  Also slowly reduce the amount of food you eat, if you are eating large portions. Eat more fibre as it fills you up quicker. Your stomach will begin to shrink and so you won't be eating as much as before.

                  Once you get going it becomes more easier to lose weight but the important thing is to know when to stop. I've been losing weight for the past few months and am now underweight because I was biking too much and not eating enough. It does become addictive to some and one of my news years resolutions is to put some of it back on.

                    another tip given to me was if you have a smoke say 8 a.m. try to go to 9a.m. before you have one then try to go up 1 hr as you get used to it,you will soon find that you will go all day ,Just keep saying to yourself I did it yesterday I can do it today,it's hard I know as I was a 40 plus a day man but with the help of my dried peas I won:dancy::dancy: Good luck

                      This is not the first time I've heard of dried peas. Do they have some narcotic properties I'm unawre of?

                      Never smoked, so not had to give up, so my advice probably useless, but I wonder if there is a forum-type self-help website? They tend to exist for all sorts of similar "giving up" projects, and you would have the benefit of other people in the same boat to encourage you, and provide suggestions, form groups of supporters.

                      I wish you luck. I lost my Father to lung cancer due to smoking, and many of his friends of that, wartime, generation :(

                      I would like to see the whole world become non-smoking

                        Of course you can get fit but don't expect to be 20 again.

                        I gave up smoking and drinking on the same day in 1964. :blue thumb:

                        It didn't take long after that to become a boring old fart - but a fitter boring old fart! :heehee:

                        Re exercise:- does typing at the computer count? My fingers look slim and healthy. :lunapic 130165696578242 5:

                        On a more serious note. Exercise is good but you shouldn't overdo it. I've known people that have become fanatical about it and either overdone it or let it become an obsession. That's not so good. Gentle, regular exercise is much better as it keeps you fit and doesn't become boring. Try and find something you enjoy doing and you're more likely to continue with it.

                        Some years back I was given free membership to a new gym near us (the owner was trying to get me to be the manager) but tried it a couple of times and hated it. Nowadays I tend to stick mainly to walking as the old bones and muscles aren't keen on other things. Gardening is good for you but isn't great from an aerobic point of view.

                          I have only smoked once and my Dad caught me, he asked me why because my friends smoked and you do.
                          He made me smoke 20 cigs one after the other, yes I was as sick as a dog, never touch one since.
                          But I do enjoy a drink.
                          Just got back from doing a 18 mile fell run in the Peak District, in combat boots and a 20lb pack.
