        I "want's" don't get;
        "Can I have", is greedy.
        "Please *may* I?" ;)

        My nanna used to say "I want never gets". Then later at school, we used to have one teacher who had a standard response to any question starting with "can I have" or even "please can I have". The standard response was "yes". If you hung around confused she would elaborate and say something like "I'm sure you can have such and such sometime if you try hard enough", meaning you are capable of having suchandsuch. She'd then go on to suggest that the question you meant to ask was "please may I have...".

        Never really understood the difference between the two myself.

          I asked my mother for a pony for Christmas when I was very young. I forgot to say "please may I" but had said, "can I have" ... her response was, "You can have 3!" I was soooo excited. Until I realised :doh:
