Hi all, I've been having a lot of problems with slugs and snails. I don't really like killing them but want them to go away. Is there anyway to stop them or plants to repel them?

    Thanks in advance

Do you mean at this time of year? Generally they aren't that active during the winter. What sort of plants are they attacking?

Not at the moment no, planning for this year. Last year they were everywhere! Had hundreds of caterpillars too, but I like the butterflies so can accept them to a certain extent.
Also worried about the dogs eating the slugs.

Rob it is possible for dogs to catch Lungworm from eating slugs , not sure of the actual chance of this happening . To guard against it your dogs would need to have Advocate spot treatment applied from March. I use the Bio slug pellets by Bayer applied sparingly , they seem to work.

If you don`t want to go the chemical route because of pets and wildlife use beer traps, cheapest beer from tesco or morrisons 4 for a pound, I personally find large jars best 2" of the brew in to jar, I put an old slate on the top leaving a small gap for the slimy @!#$%^&* to get in, drink themselves to death, empty regularly

I also use slug pubs, but I also go out when its dark with a torch and a plastic bag containing salt. Pick up any then they go in the bag of salt.

Thanks Pam, since there doesn't seem to be a way of repelling them out the garden I will do what needs to be done, this sounds like the best way so far.

I have done this before, not a big fan of the salt bath, as much as the hate slimys. Wondered if there was an easier way. Cheers Ian
