Fuchsias

Hi, have read through this whole post this morning and what a joy.

I have 3 Fuschsias in my garden, 1 in a pot which I am sure is Mrs Popple (Hardy?), one in a small border between my neighbor and I, I have the label out in the shed, this was planted last year and did well, was very slow to come back this year but no doubt that was due to the weather in Spring. It was cut down to ground just before winter on advice from next door as he does that with his. Has come back ok but seems no bigger than last year. The other was just labelled Hardy Fuchsia and was purchased from Morrisons from the bench where the put all the poorly plants and sell off cheap it was in a 3 lt pot and had filled it, but had been left to dry out, a few days of tlc and it was good to go, so it was planted in the front North facing border and has done well. Although it looks a little flattened at the mo, and I did not do a good job of dead heading so is setting seed.

Anyhow thats my history, now a couple of questions if I may be so bold..

1. Can I use the seed to grow more, if so do I remove the fleshy outer or not? and can they be sown now and the plantlets over wintered indoors?

2. From reading through the thread, if I am not mistaken I can take cuttings now also and over winter the same, can someone please confirm this for me?

Hi Steve, not sure on the seeds let someone else answer that, cuttings are so easy, take several pieces from your fuchsia 5" or so below a leaf joint, take off any flower buds, push them round the edge of a pot, you can put a plastic bag or cut off bottle, over the top if you wish, I don`t . When you see signs of new growth you have rooted cuttings,


These are some I brought back from my friends in Norfolk, took them from the bushes on Thursday, travelled to my daughters on Friday, left them in water whilst there till the Monday, potted them on the Tuesday 16th July, and as you can see, some have rooted, some not. I will pot them up later this week in separate pots.But after that treatment some still rooted, they are so easy.

My next door neighbor has the same as my mystery, he don't know either....

 

It looks more like a trailer or lax to me , Mrs Popple is upright.

My Mrs Popple is more upright, think you may have the pics mixed up, the mystery is the one in the 3rd set of pics with the ?double flower.

Mrs Popple is in a pot for now.

Think you have the mystery plant though, Dollar Princess rings a bell.

I took a cutting of a F.microphylla last September and here it is still blooming in the greenhouse (unheated) today....................


I also have lots of buds on my F.perscandens which is in a sheltered spot outdoors.

 

Good picture Longk. I've got one in full bloom in the greenhouse, also unheated.

 

Clearly tougher than it looks then!

 

It's one of two young plants from cuttings and it'll be interesting to see how they do out in the garden this year. I'd take a picture but with the on going high winds my dodgy greenhouse door has been pinned shut. I manage to get in there about once a week to check on the plants.
