Thanks again all for making me feel so welcome!

the main task at the moment is definitely the shed - one of the other things is I have to be really careful I don't damage the neighbours' one while taking it down. I imagine that'll take me a couple weekends to all get shot of, I like the patio suggestion for that spot.

The grass is in such bad condition I'm not sure if it might actually all need ripping out - I was thinking it would need attacking with a strimmer at first to get an idea of how bad it all is.

The path was all over grown as well, someone I work with suggested caustic soda, but I've really no clue (yet) with all this stuff.

The plan is to get planting some nice flowers etc at some point as my little girl is so excited we have a garden at last!

I'd start with some glyphosate for the growth on the path, that should kill off the growth and then you can assess whether re-pointing the path would be sufficient, or whether it needs to come up and be relaid? Certainly the bit up the side of the house looks as though it will only want a good clean, weeded and then re-pointed. I have used this stuff and its been very successful - stinks a bit for a week or so after its put down, but it does a good job.

The pea-shingle bed next to the path, up against the wall of the house, would struggle to support much in the way of life - assuming of course that yours is built the same way most houses are that were built by Scottish Homes back in the day; you'll probably find hefty lumps of concrete sticking out from the foundations that would preclude much from growing there. Having said that, I reckon you could 'pretty' it up without too much trouble - lay some nice new gravel (plum coloured slate, or white gravel maybe?) and then stand some planters on top.

If you decide to replace the shed, you might want to consider a potting shed style (sort of half shed, half greenhouse if you know what I mean?) then you can save a few quid by growing your own from seed?

You really have a blank canvas there, so its an ideal opportunity to make it into exactly what you want.

              Welcome! (You're ours now, mwa-ha-haa!)

Have you got a shot of the garden toward the back of the house? I thought the grass looked fine, just a touch long and in need of a trim. Spend a while thinking about what you want from the garden and asking questions before starting too much. Lose the shed lol

If you could imagine the front path lined with clumps of flowers, all fragrant and butterflies, that might be somewhat nicer than the grass, and achievable this summer!

Don't go digging it up yet, much less work to cut it!

Can't thank you all enough for the welcomes & awesome advice - I'll probably end up spending hours on here tonight!

There's a lot of litter lying about the back grass as well that'll need lifted - that broken fence is apparently the neighbours' - still to go meet them yet & see if they want to split in for something better as it's really flimsy.

I think with the shed of doom I'll need to see about hiring someone to do it, only got a wee Ford Fiesta so clearing everything would take forever!

Need a couple builders who do homers I think!

Can always break the shed apart and burn it.

When you meet the neighbours you could suggest what Loofah says about burning the shed....invite them for a 'sherry' and a hot Jacket spud and some Chestnuts and you're well away, make it easy to lose the shed:dbgrtmb:

Looking at the shed, parts of it seem to be in reasonable nick, but obviously the roof is knackered. How would it be if you offered it on Freecycle in February/March, when people are beginning to think about their allotments more, describing its condition and saying that the side panels and front are reusable but that the person who wants it needs to dismantle. You could offer to help. You could put an advert up at a local allotment site saying it's free to anyone who wants to dismantle it.
That would give you time to dive in there, remove, chuck, recycle or sell on ebay anything in there that's any good.
Honestly, I've seen many allotment sheds made out of recycled bits of stuff like that.
