Cabbages....no heart.....

First time growing Cabbages and by now i'd have expected them to have bulked up a biti'm putting it down to soft ground but i really don't know....Any pointers please

 

Shame - they look lovely and healthy. If all else fails maybe you could pretend they were spring greens?

Planted too late perhaps? or possibly the mild weather?

 

I planted them out mid July...so would you say that was too late?

I'd have thought mid July would be ok. I grew them a couple of years ago, and they made fairly rapid progress. In fact, they got too big for the spacings I'd allowed so became a bit overcrowded I don't know if it helps, but I always put in composted manure on my designated Brassica bed a few months prior to planting, always gives me good results
