What are you going to grow "New to you" for 2014

All my daffodils have started poking their noses out.... I am worried as proper winters havent started yet, and they think its spring! Any suggestions?!

 

They'll be fine. We had a mild December/early January last couple of years and all sorts of bulbs were poking out of the ground, then late January into Feb arctic blasts, snow, ice and temps of -15 and they all flourished and bloomed during March and April

They'll be fine - they'll be Early, if the mild weather continues, but they will be fine. Mild winters have happened before, and plants have been fine. Mild early half of winters, followed by cold second half, have happened too. If that happens they will just slow down / stop, and then resume once milder weather returns again.

If you need them to flower on a specific day / for a specific event then, sorry, can't help with that!

 

Mine were under two to three feet of snow last Easter and didn't see daylight for a month after but they were fine.

We had them while on holiday in Mexico, really different taste not what you expect, they use them in a salad

 

Sorry, but that's rubbish. If we had -20C tomorrow the Daffodils which are now poking through the ground will still flower as normal in a couple of months time. They would be delayed I expect but that's it. If you have got Bananas, or any other tender plants, in your garden then sure, you definitely need to be ready to protect them, or bring them in, but I would hope that folk growing those sorts of plants have fleece on hand and know what additional action to take depending on how cold the forecast says.

The cold spell in the next few days is unlikely to develop into a Beast-from-the-East as the Atlantic South Westerly has been so strong, fuelled by exceptionally fast Jet Stream, for months so the high on the continent has not had a chance to push our way much, and Atlantic air is likely to push in again shortly.

During February who knows? No one can predict the weather accurately more than a week, perhaps two, ahead. I know the Express and Daily Mail purport that they can, but every year they get it wrong - although their editor is happy as sales went up on the back of sensational headlines ... which was all that his/her boss required of him/her anyway.

 

P.S, The Polar Vortex in USA cannot travel across the Atlantic to us, it would be warmed by crossing the Atlantic. The only Polar Vortex we can get has to come to us from the Artic. For that to happen we need strong High pressure over continent, and no strong weather systems heading our way from the Atlantic. With weak systems in the Atlantic (which usually means a weak jet stream too) then our mild weather, from the prevailing South Westerly direction, can be blocked, and that blocking can then allow a polar Vortex to come down to us from the Arctic. The weather systems are not in place to allow that (with weather forecasting anything is possible of course, but the very unlikely rarely happens) so it is extremely unlikely that we will hahve Polar Vortex in next couple of weeks.

After that? Anyone's guess. Absolutely no one knows well enough to place a large bet on it - despite the fact that many claim to!
