But the creators of those ads have done their job very well. You've noticed them. They are on your mind, you've talked about them.

I agree though, some of them are annoying, but since deliberate subliminal advertising was banned in the UK many years ago now, advertising agencies have to find new ways to occupy the subconscious minds of the viewers. It was figured out a long time ago that something that invokes an emotional response sticks in the mind far better than something limited to the purely informative, as our brains have a clever filter that can discard information we don't need, but that filter is bypassed by anything that invokes our emotions. Advertisers exploit this principle by either deliberately annoying us, showing us something alluding to promises of great reward, or making us laugh. The latter is hardest, as it comes down to personal taste in humour. The 'alluding to great reward' was used extensively in car ads throughout the 1980s and 1990s with the subconscious message that if you buy this car, you'll have lots of fun with the scantily clad, nubile Nicole, until people realised that it was sexist and in any case, women buy cars too. So that just leaves the art of annoying people, which nowadays is used extensively in ads aimed at a wide range of demographics.

I can honestly say I have never been influenced or impressed enough by any advert to go out and purchase what they are advertising. I cannot be the only one!

        Cheers, Tony.

you would be surprised how adverts of any kind can make people buy stuff .... even if they think they dont ...

We love the new Go Compare advert, the best out of all the ones made so far:cool:

Dislike all the hair care/skin care product adverts even though I know I'm worth it:snork:

Also dislike all the silly adverts for new cars especially white ones that show all the dirt:biggrin:

Hate all forms of TV ads, thank goodness for record+fast forward button. Especially obnoxious are all the gambling, payday loan, beautify and vanity ads.
I've been banging on about getting rid of the box but the OH hasn't caved .... yet!
Impact on me is minimal as I'm more likely to avoid buying anything advertised on telly whether they annoy me or not. In any case, buy very little in the way of conumerist rubbish.

I rarely look at any of the ads, always have a book beside me, but something that annoys me is the very poor English and grammar used in the ads.

The phrase that annoys me most of all, probably because of the high frequency of it, is 'For free'. It is grammatically incorrect and, as I'm pedantic, I think that business (and other) organisations should always attempt to be correct.

In personal messages it's not important.

                        As clueless says:-

but the effect that annoyance has on me is for me to say to myself "never buy that product".

Same here plus I've got a long standing habit of turning the sound off when the adverts come on which I now do automatically without thinking. I just have to remember not to do it if I'm watching telly with someone else!
