For those who are interested Stargazing Live with Dr Brian Cox and the team starts tomorrow (Tues) at 8pm on BBC2.

I had a look on the BBC website and found info for the programme and there's a nice free calender to download showing what to look for in the night sky and when, with facts and photos. :)

I feel compelled to spring to the defence of Prof. Cox. He is an absolute genius, of the kind that will go down in history. A top boffin. Yet unlike many top boffins, he also has the skill to convey his message in laymans terms.

I saw him the other night on Stargazing Live. Some of the questions he asked, I know from having seen him in other programs that he knows the answers, but clearly he was asking the kind of questions that he knew the viewers would be asking. Sometimes people at the top of their game forget how advanced their knowledge is, and they forget that not everybody just knows 'basic' stuff like elementary quantum mechanics. For example in program about the Cassini Huygens mission, I saw one of the boffins openly mocking a viewer for asking if their discovery of methane oceans and rain could mean there was life. Prof Bri knows the answer to these things, but knows that most don't, so he asks questions on their behalf, and guides the responses such that ordinary folk will understand. That's the mark of true genius. The ability to understand insanely clever stuff is not that great. The ability to understand it and still remember that many don't, and to explain it it a way that will be understood, that's true genius.

I must admit, I can't think who the Scottish chap is. You don't mean Mr Dara O'Briain do you? (he's Irish)
