I loved making these planters out of drain pipe - cheap, cheerful and lovely

Excellent, but I hope you don't mind me saying, there's a slightly missed opportunity in the 2011 photos. In that breeze block arrangement, which is a good idea that I wish I'd thought of, I'd have filled it with soil, planted big plants like sage and rosemary and a few flower in the top, then filled all the gaps with smaller and/or trailing plants like thyme, nasturtium, strawberries, and maybe a few more flowers like lobellia or them busy lizzie things.

Of course I don't mind you saying. Great ideas are shared.

The breeze block I built as a fire pit. I only turned it into this planter when the local council gave us free garden waste collection. The fire pit became redundant then. The gaps that you see have no contact with the main fire pit area. It's all concreted smooth to fill the gaps so sadly can't plant through the gaps. However I used to put covered tea lights in those gaps on a late summer evening and it was delightful.

Another problem I have sadly are slugs and pests eating the bedding plants and flowers In that planter so that put me off such adorable plants. I don't use slug pellets or insecticide because of my 2 dogs.
