Don't forget it's the bird watch this weekend, it only takes an hour and they also record what other animals visit your garden such as foxes and badgers.

Will you be taking part? I will!

I originally intended to do so but I really don't approve of a few things the RSPB have done recently.

Last year I missed it but submitted what I'd seen recently at the time anyway, I guess they'll still be happy with the information.

I'm doing it. I have emailed the RSPB but in case they don't come back to me, maybe someone can tell me if I include my little wood or not. It is at the end of my garden but isn't a garden as such. I don't want to include the wrong things and know 100% I have 3 Buzzards and a Wood Pecker in the wood atm. Buzzards have been here for at least 40 years according to a local so feel they should be included but maybe not?

Go for it, on the website it says you can go to a local park etc to do it so I don't see why they would say no. As I've said before I think they will be happy for the information.

I'd include the birds in your wood as it's still your property. If I've got it right you just have to record what's on your patch for the hour in which you choose to record them so they have to be actually present at that time. It also includes any birds that land on boundary fences. Like nFrost has said, go for it!

Ok thanks, seemed the right thing to do as the wood is on part of my land. What's the betting my Buzzards/Wood Pecker do a disappearing act on me at the time I decide to do the recording?!

I volunteer for a "rival" charity (I won`t say which one) and we have had a sudden influx of volunteers from an rspb site nearby. Basically the rspb decided that they no longer needed volunteers to help them and sacked them all in return for getting paid help instead. Many had worked for decades there for free and weren't given anything.

Also a charity that spends millions on changing their logo from upper case letters to lower ones clearly doesn't deserve my money.

I happily helped out with their garden watch last year and have since been inundated with emails and letters saying how Mich they need my money to carry on which simply isn't the case. If they really were that desperate for my money then they wouldn't be able to spend millions on sending me letters every month.

Perhaps the birdwatch has more to do with getting a very useful email list of possible donators rather than finding out the health of Britain's birds population!
