Possibly not now - they did for a while in the 90's; I recall the process for approval by Bose to stock their product, stringent was an understatement! We took on the dealership around the time that the Lifestyle 10 was hitting the market, and back then it was the thing to have. Their Acoustimass systems were also the dogs dangly bits (and probably still are).

Sadly, as the age of internet retail has advanced, many companies have had to forego traditional dealerships and sell direct - this is especially true for niche companies like Bose. Bowers & Wilkins however, they are almost the exact opposite - it has only fairly recently that you will find their products for sale on the internet or from dealers that have websites; their philosophy was very much that their products were of such quality that they should be seen and heard at a dealers before purchase, and that they didn't want to get into the 'tackiness' that is price haggling.

As an aside, I had a pair of DM4's (B&W), very nice they were too:blue thumb:

CURRYS carry Bose systems, so you can hear them in the shop Alongside other systems before you buy

          Going back a bit there @Freddy :)

There is a very special place in my heart reserved for B&W - I have had many pairs of their speakers (and sold many, many more in my previous career); I started with DM110, then graduated to DM600, DM610, DM601, DM602 right up to S3, a fleeting moment with a pair of P4 in rosenut (and I would buy a used pair of them tomorrow if I had the money and could find them in good nick), and really would like to have a set up comprising CM4, CM1 etc.

When she was younger, my daughter took it upon herself to wreck the tweeters on two pairs of B&W that I had at the time (DM602 front, DM601 rear); I called B&W to price up the spares (bearing in mind that they were nautilus tweeters), half expecting them to give me short shrift and direct me to a servicing dealer, and ended up having a great natter with the chap on the phone who had a recollection of me from ten years earlier (goodness knows how he remembered me!), and arranged for the replacement parts for just under £70 which were sat on my doormat the following day.

Their customer service always has been exemplary in my book, and their product second to none - in fact, only Monitor Audio comes close.

This has nothing to do with improving TV sound but:

We have Sonos throughout the house. Its the only electronic gadget that I have ever bought that does what it says on the tin when you just plug it in.

Mrs K was sceptical (and is not gadget prone at all), probably in part because of the cost (I imported the lot in one go from the USA as it was half the price, then) but she would be the first to sing its praises now.

It doesn't crash, need rebooting, or misbehave. My only gripe is that latterly there seem to have been loads of updates to accommodate This and That new technology, and they can take a while and once you install one if you then have another box somewhere else in the house, normally off, you have to wait for that to upgrade the next time you turn it on ...

It picks up all the MP3 files we have (ripped to a PC many many years ago in order to have on iPods etc.), internet radio, and a Spotify subscription that the kids have. We have handsets to choose a track etc. or just use an APP on a phone

We bought #1 daughter a B & W Zeppelin for her 18th. Fabulous sound, and "luggable", so she carts it wherever she wants any music.

Easy enough to download a Posh Logo and print out a sticker - for those that way inclined. Download an Aga one whilst you are about it :heehee:

I have a pair of DM2As B & W speakers bought in 1970. Still going strong and a very natural sound. I still have the original cardboard cartons they came in, together with the instruction manuals. Paired to an Armstrong 626 receiver.

Ooooh, lovely kit! 626 was the one with the MMC phono stage if memory serves? And that wonderful way they switched from one input to the other - fade away and fade in, and no nasty cracks and spits from knackered mechanical switches.

Quite sad in some ways when you think of some of the brands that were making incredibly good stuff that are simply no longer around, or are fairly obscure - Harold Leak (Stereo 20 Valve amp is a thing of beauty), Rogers (LS3/5a anyone?), Celestion (Ditton?), even Roberts Radio aren't Roberts any longer - they were sucked into the Dimplex group years ago. Grundig - gone, now only used as a badge on el cheapo tat from Currys; PYE (sucked into Philips before being killed off), Dynatron - did the rounds finally being sucked into Philips, and I believe the name is held by the Dimplex group in alongside Roberts?

Hacker - what ever happened to them? BSR? Are Ortofon still on the go?

                So many names. :frown:

Sorry Jenny, didn't intend to hi-jack your thread.

Quad? Are they still making electrostatic speakers? My old man have a couple of them, size of radiators! Got plenty of sound out of them ... Valve amp too, back then.

God yes - how could I forget Quad! A quick Google reveals that they are still in business :)

Got to love a valve amp - my first encounter with one was one of Harold Leak's creations that had been brought into the workshop for repair; I wasn't let loose on it as I was just an apprentice, but I recall two of us going out to a job and locking the workshop up with this thing on soak test - when we got back and opened the door, the room was considerably warmer than it was when we left, and the sound was just incredible!

Gawd, I can't make head nor tail of this thread, except to ask myself why have so many speakers broken on a lot of GC members tellys all of a sudden?

                  As do I :frown:

As I recall, I paid around £200 for them, back in '77 (?). I was paid maybe £40 pw back then? So, they weren't cheap!

I had one of those given to me. Not bad, as I recall. Very solidly put together.

My favourite speakers though would have to be the Kef Concord, which I still have up in the loft. Incredible bass:blue thumb:

When I move, it's my intention to put together another 'system', utilising my old Rega Planar 3 turntable, a thing of beauty, even now.

                  Yes. :)

Sorry for stealing your thread @Jenny namaste :heehee:

I am simply loving reading all your memories of great sound FC and Freddy. We had Kef Coralles? a long time ago when our eardrums loved being wrecked but have to be a bit more careful now.
Bike + speed + helmets didn't do my ears much good sadly so I now miss out on the string section of good music - hence the need for something to boost the carp sound on the Samsung telly. Nice piccie - absolutely rubbish sound . Therefore, gotta do something about it but will take some time and try and listen to some demos. Bose are sending me the info. leaflet and they will give you a 30 day free trial= deliver and collect.
                  Jenny

Dunno if it is a sensible answer, or if I will be shot down in flames!, but we have a 5-speaker blueray player and we connect the sound from the sky box into that (via an optical cable I think). I don't even know if my telly has a speaker ... or if it is connected ...

We certainly get the sound of planes flying through the room, and the Woofer shaking the house, when watching movies :)

Mrs K hates (and I support her) the fact that you have to fiddle with 3 separate remotes to get all systems to DefCon One before you have picture, sound and satellite feed :( Previous systems would sense that a signal was present on Channel-X and switch to that input, but whatever we have now won't play that game, or is beyond my wit to configure.

Kef Concord - were they the ones that had their entire exterior covered in cloth so the front sides and back looked pretty much the same? I was never really that up on Kef stuff I'm afraid.

Rega Planar 3 - now that is a lovely thing to have :approve:

Glad we haven't bored you to tears @Jenny namaste - the home trial is certainly the way to go with the Bose unit, there is no better way to buy audio equipment than with your ears.

Yes. The bass doesn't boom, but you get this lovely 'woomph' from them:)

Whilst we're talking speakers, stand mounted or floor mounted, pros and cons?
I seem to have this inbuilt idea that bass will be better with floor mounted?
