    I thought the Palio diet was where you took a mixture of sugar and ground coffee and then ran around, on all fours, in the Piazza del Campo in Siena.

        Margarine is a French invention to make us all ill! :heehee: They invented it in the 1800's and persuaded us it was good for us. It's actually a hydrogenated fat full of those pesky trans fatty acids that are very bad for you. Trans fats are much worse for you than saturated fats so you should try to keep off of margarine and similar products.

        Some easy to read info - without all the high tech detail of the processing of veggie oils to make them solid :scratch:

            You need to look on the pack. If it says 'hydrogenated' or 'trans fats' (sometimes labelled as tfa - trans fatty acids), then it's not good.

            If you're using it as a spread then you're better off using butter (unless you're Vegan or allergic to dairy). If you're using it for cooking then you're better off using oil. Some oils are over processed (some of the seed or nut oils) so also contain some trans fats - but not a lot. Pressed oils are better.

            If you're anti GM foods then you don't want to buy Canola oil (not much sold in this country but a lot is sold in the U.S.) as it's a form of GM rapeseed.

            Overheating oils can also create trans fats so you should try not to get them 'smoking'.

            I tend to use light olive oil for cooking but there are lots of other choices. Coconut oil used to be thought of as bad but they're now changing their mind about it.

              Trans-fat / hydrogenated oils is pretty much plastic, except made from veg oil instead of mineral oil.

              I agree with Kristen about myfitnesspal. It is a very effective tool to help reduce weight without going into any weird dietary regime.

              At the beginning of 2012, MrH decided that it was time to get his weight back into the "normal" BMI range. We discovered that there was a myfitnesspal app available for the iPad which made calorie counting even easier. He set his calorie level in myfitnesspal to lose about 1lb a week and, having started the year at just under 14st, by August had met his target of 11st:dbgrtmb:. His waist size also reduced by about 4in. Since then he has stopped monitoring his calorie intake but has stayed at roughly the same weight.

              Our diet had always been reasonable well balanced (lots of home grown vegetables see to that) so it was really just about reducing quantities or doing more exercise to "earn" the right to have a glass of wine or a piece of cheese, for example. Myfitnesspal was very useful in helping to monitor calorie intake and calories burned by exercise:hapfeet:.

              It also produced a graph showing weight against time so that he could easily see his progress. Although his weight occasionally "plateau-ed" as his body adjusted to the reduced calorie intake, it was good to be able to see the steady progress downwards.

                  I can't believe what's happening. I did some very, very rough calcs to work out how many calories I needed to drop and what rate of weight loss that should give, with a target of 2lbs per week. I've been watching my intake but certainly not starving myself or eating anything faddy, and I'd applied the principle that there's probably more calories than I think in my food, so even allowing some slack I still stay on target.

                  When I started I said to myself that friday's were exempt, as friday at my work is chippy day, and I had a big chip butty. My weight is dropping off like crazy. I've shaken off 7lbs in 2 weeks.

                  I'm just off to make some cheese on toast. Not as bad as it sounds as I've only had porridge and a bowl of soup today, plus an orange.
