How neat is this ! I had a present off a cast iron griddle , herbs and sauces to prepare Mexican food on the BBQ , great present :dbgrtmb: In the package was what looked like a book of matches - it was 5 Serrano Chilli seeds mounted on planting stalks , you just stick them in the compost up to the marked line and away you go . Its the future

Looking at the destructions on the packets, I will have to be sowing my Dichondra silver falls, and both types of begonia before too long.

Are begonias a faff, or do they germinate quite well?

              Hiya F/C

I've tried a few times to grow from seed, and failed every time, not a single one. I probably did something wrong...

Hi Freddy - blimey, I might have set myself up for a fall this year then, as my plans are centred around loads of begonias from seed. The dichondra are apparently fussy too.

Oh well, I suppose it is worth the challenge.

I reckon I will get them going sooner rather than later though (thinking maybe a week on Saturday) as they look like they will take a while to get to a decent size

              Hiya F/C

I think it's probably vital to keep them at a constant temperature, not too wet and no direct sunlight, but like I said, I didn't get on with them.

Temperature isn't a major issue to start with, as I always start early things off at the back of the living room by the French doors - watering might be a problem, but we'll see. I assume that once they have germinated and get going they are a bit less fickle?

I expect they will need good light. If they get that they will grow strongly, which will strengthen their immune system; they will also drink more, which makes watering less hit & miss (compared to if they drink little).

With poor light, such as we get in Winter, they may get away more slowly, not have such a strong immune system, and thus be more susceptible to disease and over watering.

If you can give them extra light I reckon that will help.

Well 2014 planting has started here ! Just put my Chilli seeds in to soak . Apache , Cayenne and Serrano. I'll plant them up tomorrow morning and straight into the airing cupboard for 5-6 days. Sweet peas will be planted tomorrow as well :dbgrtmb:
