Just asking all my friends when transferring images from camera to PC/Laptop is it safer to use a USB direct or to use a memory card,in case of a power surge.Thank you:)

I use the USB cable, reasoning that memory card connectors have a limited life.

USB if poss, less fiddly. USB can be used for a lot of other connections so can be handy to have.

            USB cable every time (now!)

When I got my first laptop with a card reader I was really thrilled (no phaffing about with cables). But, the day came when I put my camera card it the slot and something happened: the card couldn't be "read" and I lost all the photo's on the card too :cry3: Haven't a clue what went wrong with it but, I was advised to always use the cable for the future. I have and I've not had any issues since.

That's my two pennyworth anyway :heehee:

Completely agree and it's not the first time that I have heard of a memory card being corrupted when inserted into a computer.
By using USB transfer one adds an extra layer of protection as the computer has no access to the memory card, instead the data is being buffered and sent to it by the camera.

I've just got a bit dubious about constantly removing an SD card from a camera, inserting in the slot in the laptop, and putting back in the camera, as the one I've been doing that with has fallen apart and required Sellotape to hold it together to get all my pics backed up.

Hmmmm, you've all got me thinking now. I've not used a USB for anything, so obviously I'm still using the card, with no issues as yet.

The clue is in the word: yet! ;)

                      Just saying!

Did it have a lot of "dirt" on it?
A simple "format disk" would have been easier. :)

Usually with a card you just shove it in your live PC/Laptop
With USB you still shove it in but THEN you turn your CAMERA/Device ON
Therefore no surge or sparking as in inserting a card IMHO
