Where will you put them after the airing cupboard, Harry, please?
I'd like to give chilli's a go, but, I don't have a greenhouse, or heated propagator so I was wondering what you do afterwards. TIA :)

Hi @"M" , our airing cupboard has a hot water tank in it so it gets blooming hot ! I put mine at the bottom where it is about 30°c for around 6 days. Lots of houses now don't have hot water tanks so they may not be hot enough . Chilies really need to be above 20°c to germinate so I think most windowsills could be a bit cool . If you have a shelf above a radiator this would be good or a little nook by the gas boiler. Get your thermometer out and find your hot spots ! They don't need light for germination and they should germinate in 10 to 20 days , after that if you have a nice sunny windowsill they will be fine . If you are growing them in the house on a windowsill try a small shrubby one . I am growing Apache for the first time this year which should produce lots of small fairly hot chillies on a small plant. If we have a good summer ( please god ! ) they will be OK in a sheltered sunny spot. If all else fails your local nursery or GC will sell Chilli seedlings around May . Mind boggling amount of info on t'internet about Chilis , lots of really good sites :dbgrtmb:

Bought my first bag of seed compost.... its going to happen shortly!

Begonias will be my first sow I think this year, then before long the floodgates will be opened.

        Thank you, @HarryS

I have a mahoosive airing cupboard which can definitely take a few chilli seeds ... thereafter, they will need to fight for pole position on the south facing windowsill of the landing :paladin:

I'm trying the two plants which I bought (reduced) last year and saved seed from:
        Hot Banana
        Hot Carrot
        (both from Homebase)

Thank you for explaining your style, Harry. I shall give it a go

And that's all *our* fault too, Mrs FC!!!!!

And I'm going to be taking bets soon on what that "happening" is going to be  :heehee:

PS: Overlooked the white emulsion paint

Hopefully by this time tomorrow, there will be photos @"M" :)

Very kind of you to ensure that the blame is not directed at me though.... :snork:

@fat controller I've got tears of laughter running down my cheeks ... I think when you were reading the other thread, the one word you appear to have overlooked was .... Grow lights, heaters etc, on a budget

Thank goodness for digital photography ... no "developing" charges there, eh! ;)

Still, I'm now of a mind that Mrs FC will adore how she can step outside and enjoy the scents, sounds and feel of the garden you are creating for your family to enjoy (and a heck of a lot cheaper than taking the family on holiday abroad - especially during term time when you have to add fines and a criminal record into the mix)!

Fill yer boots - and we'll fill Mrs FC with whispers of how you were rhubarb in our hands (e.g. forced!) :heehee:

We all struggle for windowsill space in March ! I think Hot Banana and Carrot are similar to Hungarian Hot Wax Chilli , a super chilli big with medium heat :dbgrtmb:

To be fair, I have so far spent less than £50 on my wee cabinet project - I don't count the cost of the compost, as I would be buying that anyway; I even got a length of copper pipe from a friend today to use to hang the lights from - he saw me looking at it on the Wickes website yesterday at work, and asked what I was up to...... long story short, he said not to buy the pipe as he had a length going spare :) (of course he knows his supply of seedlings for the spring is ensured, not that it was ever at any risk) and, if the begonias turn out to be reasonably successful I will have saved quite a chunk over buying them as plugs (if they fail, I will look a complete berk of course :snork:).

Mrs C doesn't complain, bless her - she loves taking photos of everything when it is all in flower, and of course tries to photo the insects that visit because the flowers are there. Holidays rarely happen for us (most of our money goes on rent!) so its good to have a hobby that gets us out in the sun; still, its nice to have a fallback excuse if she does start to complain.......

I am trying Sweet Corn this year - (not that I can eat them - but the grandchildren love them) - but I suspect the squirrels might be having more than me. :dunno: Last year they picked off all strawberries before they were ripe - and didn't even eat them :mute: This year I am growing the strawbs in troughs on the window sills - 15 feet up - let's see if the little beggers get to them.
