Best supplier of Compost 2015/2016

...after the debacle of Wickes changed compost formula a couple of years ago I have struggled to find a compost that I have been 100% happy with, last year I used Asda's Proffesional MP for most of the year, it was good stuff, gave good results and didn't have too many woody bits in it, a common annoyance in most MP composts these days.

Yesterday however I called in at our local farm shop/nursery and they'd just had a delivery of Clover MP compost and I asked the guy if he could open a bag to have a look as I'd not tried this one before - WOW I was in love , finally I had again found a compost that was dark, rich, fine textured, soft and crumbly and not a sign of any wood , it was a little more expensive than some but I didn't care and promptly bought 3 75lt bags , with added perlite or vermiculite I can use it for potting up and its also of a fine enough texture to use for seed sowing and seedlings, Happy Days Hopefully the results will be as good as it looks

 

Nice one Bilbo, and being Clover, it should be high in Nitrogen

Not sure what sphagnum moss is though?

 

Spagnum moss is the stuff you see in garden centers in bags what people use to line hanging baskets

 

oooooooooooh, I did find it held the water better than the other stuff I tried. I think I'll have to order some off the internet this year as the GCs near me change what they sell every blummin' week!

Its Sphagnum Moss Peat, its the dead moss found in peat bogs, unlike the moss itseft which is actually still green and alive.
It does make good compost, and a one time all MP composts were based on it, but its considered a bit environmentally unfriendly these days due to the loss of large areas of bog.

 

So not the same as normal peat?

 

Yes its normal Sphagnum Moss Peat, its usually a brown colour.

You sometimes get Sedge Peat, it usually black and grainy, not really spongy, that was sold years ago as a soil conditioner, but probably in short supply nowdays also.

 

@nFrost ....did you get the Erin Excel locally?....

I think Northfield Plants is a good little GC...Not far from you

 

I did think it was a lighter colour than usual, even a bit orangey.
