There are many excellent amusing Top Gear stunts, but there is only one that actually impressed me beyond the amusement factor, and that was when the had to build an amphibious car cable of crossing the English channel.

    Here it is:

There's a couple still being driven this area and I catch a sight of them every now and then. There used to be one parked permanently at the entrance of a Plant Nursery and Antique Garden Centre near Lymm in Cheshire but checking on the Net I see it has closed down.:dunno:

I agree, as it's not only amusing but also technically very challenging to create an amphibious car.
If I'm not mistaken they had two cracks at it, just can't remember if they were both in the same episode or different episodes.

I think they had two goes across different episodes. In the first attempt, Clarkson went so over the top with his choice of engines. He had two massive great outboards that each delivered about 200hp if I remember right. As a consequence, he produced such a massive bow wave that it come over the top and sunk it if I remember right. It also capsized on the lake during the practice exercise.

        That's right, I remember now.
In the second attempt he cut back on the horse power and used some empty metal barrels on the side of the Toyota for extra buoyancy.

There were quite a lot of variations on the theme too, many of which I saw a few of as a kid, mainly due to them being cheap as chips to run for the factory workers, and in some cases they were almost desirable:

There's a whole family of Reliants :runforhills:

Seriously, what ever happened to the company?
I have quite an interest in the history of the more obscure marques.
Are there any books available that you could recommend?

I fell in love with the Scimatar back in the middle 60's when I saw one at a Car Dealers in Ipswich and was going to buy it. Unfortunately, before I could I was posted to Aden for two years [lucky me:heehee:]. I guess it was just the shape of it but at the time it looked a real mean machine!!

They went bust in the late 90's/early 2000's from memory - their designs were simply never going to meet the advancing safety standards, and in my opinion they were too small to move forward to designing something that was suitable for the modern world.

I can't think of any books offhand, but you might like these websites:

Now that is a nice car, it will bankrupt you with maintenance, but a nice car.
