Pattern help please!

I've posted this here in preference to the 'Crafters' forum to reach anyone that can help me. Are there any members on GC that can knit or make sense of an American pattern for me please?

I'm knitting the fifth size but on the Set-Up Row I can't seem to work out the pattern evenly across the amount of stitches I have available. I have 56 stitches on the needle but the way I'm reading the pattern it comes to less, where am I going wrong please?

The abbreviation 'pm' stands for place marker.

 

Hi Sheal that's a bit of a mystery The only way I get to the 56 is as follows
p1, pm, p1, (k2 p2) (k2 p2) p1, pm p34 pm p1 (k2 p2 ) (k2 p2 ) p1, pm,p1. = 56 stitches.

I used to love knitting and a challenge but that pattern isn't really clear.

I had to get my needles and some wool to try and work it out. I must say I liked the feel of the wool again after many years.

Annie.......Thanks for your help, that's the only way I could work it out as well. The rest of the set up rows are laid out differently and having checked those the numbers work out okay. I can only think it's a pattern error, trust it to be on the first row! I'll try it out and if it looks okay I will carry on, it probably won't show anyway being on the neckline and the pattern changes after that.

What have I done?......are you hooked again!

It's a bit beyond my skills anyway I think Sheal. I am very impressed by your bravery in attempting it. Looking forward to seeing staged progression. Reminds me of Nathan's allotment plot - that will be good to see as well,

Thanks Jenny. I'm sure you could knit it but perhaps with and English pattern which sadly doesn't exist. What is a little strange is the fact it's knitted from top to bottom. I will put progress reports in 'Crafters Corner' assuming there is progress!

 

I could so easily get hooked again, the trouble is that when I started something I couldn't put it down and I just don't have the time these days. Maybe when I retire I will think about it. When I did knit I got very bored with easy patterns and enjoyed the challenge of a more intricate pattern.

No idea Sheal

I've knitted a pair of socks with 4 strands of wool that stood up on their own, and a jumper that Mick Aston would have been proud of.

Then I lay in bed one morning thinking how on earth a loom works.

Worked it out in my head & got up and built one.

Far quicker than knitting

 

I like the loom idea Zigs, but they don't knit pullovers and cardi's. I knit because I enjoy it so speed isn't an issue. Talking of speed, I might have this present knit ready for next winter if I'm lucky, it's proving very difficult. I've knitted two rows in two hours and I'm not sure they're right, I'm having to read between the lines of the pattern.

 

Julie knocks an Aran jumper a week out here, then gives it to any stray cat or person passing, more wool more wool, If it is not an Aran a week then it is four toddlers jump suits hats and gloves
I think the five grandkids have a woollen jumper, coat, or cardigan for every day of the YEAR

She is not interested in paid work, as it is a hobby she likes
The wool shop offered to buy the Arans, for a few pounds plus wool, then they sell them at £70 each in the shop
