My mates dad had a black one, with dark brown velour interior, and I remember it being as smooth as silk to travel in, and quite quick too. Reality, 25 or so years on is likely to be much different however.

When they did run, they ran quite nicely especially the 3.5L V8 models.

Pretty sure that is what he had - he owned an Austin/Rover dealership, so I doubt that money would have been much of a problem at the time.

There are loads of old cars that I would love a shot at again - but in some ways I worry that I would regret it if they didn't live up to the expectations of my memory?

Very true, some memories should stay exactly that, just memories.

Interestingly I see the models made in the 60's used a DKW motor.

              How about the Jensen Interceptor.
Nice looking car with it's 6L V8 engine.

Funny you should mention them - as I walked out of the garden centre yesterday, I saw a car that I haven't seen in years! A Talbot Solara (although the one I saw was burgundy/silver two-tone):

Now, as we are continuing to meander down memory lane, when I were a lad, I always wanted one of these:

Best of it is, I wouldn't give a French car houseroom nowadays.

Must agree with you, French and American cars are not my cup of tea.

Below is a link with some very interesting history about Simca (remember those?) and their tie up with Peugeot, Renault, Citroen, Chrysler and how Talbot fits into the whole scheme of things.
The more I read up about the auto industry, the more interesting it becomes.

I only barely remember the Simcas - being from South West Scotland, we were treated to plenty cousins of the Simca 1000 - - the Hillman Imp, made in Linwood, from bits of pre-rusted metal :heehee:
