I suspect the heron has been photoshopped Woo, it looks like it's been subject to sharpening.

Was the picture of the voles taken using a long lens or by placing a camera near one of the little clearings they make for sunbathing and using a wireless shutter release?

I very carefully steered a narrowboat towards a Heron a few years ago with my daughter sitting in the prow holding my camera but she completely mucked it up.

Lovely shots but I agree with Dave, I think the Heron has had a 'makeover'. :)

What I like about our GC Tog competitions is that we don't "cheat" like that do we,
              DO WE?

No we don't cheat Jenny! We've had discussions about photo enhancement here on GC and I'm one that thinks, what's the point of taking a picture and then changing it, it loses it's natural ambience. :)

I'm old school too. Takes some of the skill out of it IMO, although I do allow myself to tweak the brightness if needed. 99% of the time I use manual settings on my camera.

As far as the Heron goes, even if it has had some work it is within the rules of the competition as published on the website.

Yes but what chance have we that don't use Photoshop, any or exactly the same?;)

Having completed Steve Randles photography course, I am now happy with my camera and results, I would not know how to tweak the results anyway even though I have the progs needed

I tried sharpen and have not seen any difference whatever, maybe because I am half blind :-)
(never in a comp, no point if I can not see any difference)
It does amaze me when you see a pic like the Heron one, so sharp and in your face
My camera takes pics at 1/8000 and on a sturdy tripod the feathers are still blured, Eye oh was that an eye mate

If the camera is set up right and the photographer has an eye for a good picture, then in my opinion shots can be equally as good as those above. There are some here on GC that would match those shots! :)

As I see it, if I had entered a competition and got beaten by a photoshopped photo - so what! If I got beat by an unmessed with photo - then I would sulk!
