I'm wondering (without giving out personal details obviously) how people remember/store/keep their banking details. I'm not talking about online banking fraud/phishing etc but how you keep your records for each bank account within easy access and easy to keep safe to acces your account/s online (the way requiring usually various bits of info for access).

I must admit that until recently I kept mine in a concertina folder all easy-peasy for anyone who had the folder to use my online banking at will. Daft I know, but an easy solution

I did try something that was recommended I think by Which? and that was keeping different bits of info (password, security number, and the seemingly millions of bits of other info you need to access online accounts) in different places in the house, but this didn't work as once collected I couldn't figure out the 'code' I'd used to disguise which bits of info went with which bank account.

    Anyone got a good method?

    GG

For pin codes I use a section of the numbers from OLD telephone numbers.
Most of my other info is on an excel sheet with passwords and Ids half xxx'd out. Its easy to remember if you have most of the password.

I put things in my contact list on my mobile, use a relevant name with the proper codes and the last digits are the ones needed.

I keep mine in my head, only just this evening actually I came a cropper

I had a phone call from Virgin Media, saying what a wonderful customer I was, and to reward me, with no charge 0845 0870 or any companies mobile phone number, along with £5 off
Just provide password letters 1 5 and 7, which I refused, along with other pertinent questions

Anyway the call long gone I tried to log on to my account to see if it had been touched
I typed the password WRONG tried lower case only Wrong, tried capital to start then LC Wrong
Next comes the as you have failed wait five minutes before trying again, only this time it was
my password and type in the two mangled words below, five goes, I could not even make out the mangled words
Next name password mangled words and YOUR MEMORABLE PLACE, Well it seems the MEMORABLE place I chose never to forget twenty years ago when I joined United Artists was alas not so Memorable

I ended up phoning the help line, to no joy as the first question was YOUR MEMORABLE PLACE, I told them I could not remember as it was so long ago, but if you could tell me the first and third letter I could complete the well know phrase or saying NO CHANCE

I still have no access to my ISP accounts phone TV or Broadband accounts :-(

Though they did agree it was them that called me earlier and the goodies were added
Next strange thing was they called ME on my wife's MOBILE She is on a different phone network and we have never given Virgin her number ?

To save my brain I use KeePass for all my passwords, PINs and related stuff, it works on my PC and smartphone:

It is a condundrum. There was a time when I could do it all from memory but currently I have 8 online logins I need to know, each of these have roughly 3 pieces of info to log in in a normal way, as well as those card reader thingummies with some of them (Barclays has the most hoops to jump to simply login). And as @Jack McHammocklashing notes above, if you happen to get things wrong a few times and get locked out there are those daft things like Favourite Pet etc. to remember as well.

@ARMANDII I have thought of a safe, I need one anyway for fire protection (been saying I'll buy one for about 4 years now LOL)
Some of the other suggestions are possible, though keeping them on my phone I think might be a bit risky as I'd be worried about losing it somehow. I'll look into the keypass thing.
Anything has got to be a bit more safe than what I do now.
              Cheers

It's obviously a concern, I once had a phone stolen containing my KeePass password database, it's securely encrypted (as much as anything can be) but just to be safe I changed all the passwords. It's pretty easy to do, KeePass auto-generates passwords so I just let it generate new ones and clicked on each account to update. Most were quickly changed, the painful ones are the banks as they need those card reading thingummies you mention which KeePass does not automate.

Files in my head are prone to spontaneous self-deletion these days!

If you bank with Barclays they send you a little machine called a Pinsentry. My computer stores my user number but I have to use my debit card and PIN in the machine before I can access the account. They use the same machine in the branches also if you need info about your accounts.

My Santander account was more problematic because they rejected lots of passwords as being too weak, but I finally found one based on topics and numbers of interest to me that I can remember.

I remember stuff in my head only years later.

I find that data on receipts, shopping lists, calendars, etc,. pinned up in the kitchen make better passwords than stuff written on a 'post it 'stuck on my monitor.
