I didn't find washing nappies an issue with my machine John. I also used to rinse the nappies out before they went in the machine. :)

metanium is great for Treating nappy rash but would work out expensive to use as a barrier

Lots of advice for putting them on but not a lot about the "end" product

You need a good quality bucket, and a cheap bleach product (now called expensive nappysan) mix cold water and a little bleach to make a weak solution

You remove the "filled" nappy, and shake the contents down your loo

You then place the soiled nappy into the bucket filled with cold water and bleach, keep adding the nappies, through out the day, then leave to steep overnight

In the morning thoroughly rince the nappies, and put on a boil wash

If child is constantly screaming, REMOVE the nappy pin from the Bairns belly button and affix through the nappy only

Good for you chimneyrosegarden! It's just great to see someone taking the 'green' and a bit of effort rather than the easy and expensive option.
Can't advise on folding as we've forgotten and methods change anyway. Our 'babies' are now in their 30's but we still had the nappy pail until a couple of years ago and it was great for car washing and the terry nappies lasted for years as polishing cloths. We did use vaseline and as far as we can tell our two grew up reasonably sane and unblemished and one has presented us a grand-daughter, though she grew up (now 4) using disposables.

As we all of a similar age have remarked, we didn`t have disposable, I had an old fashioned boiler so used to boil them for hours, it seemed. Zinc and castor oil cream is what I used, and my daughter being a red head, fair skin, was very sensitive to chemical products and that suited her.
Regarding folding, its a designated size, it will only soak up a certain amount of liquid however its folded.

Just to add my penny's worth. My cousin who is a bit ..... (another word for backside!) did a costing for traditional nappies as opposed to disposable ones. Much to my surprise he worked out that there was not a huge amount of difference in cost when you take into account the extra fuel costs wear and tear on the washing machine etc etc. I wouldn't have believed it BUT he is a very highly thought of accountant so he is likely to be right......certainly makes out he is in all matters to do with finance!
